FUNNY hand!, MozMan, 13. Aug 2003 11:34

I was playing 3/6 HE at my B&M last night, and had the funniest hand.

I was dealt Qx in the BB and saw the flop for free. I flopped a Q for top pair, and there were str8 possibilities on the board, so I thought to be careful. I bet the Q to make str8-draws pay and fold-off anyone who didn't catch, and hoped that anyone with a made hand would raise so I could fold. I got only one caller.

On the turn, I catch another Q, so I bet at it again, and again he calls. The river comes a blank, and I bet out again. This time he raises me, and I think maybe he had the str8 all along and was bringing me to the river for the extra bets. With 3 Qs, I don't want to lay down, so I make the crying call and turn my hand.

As I'm turning my hand, he flips his cards triumphantly and we all stare in disbelief at an 82o that had NO PART of the board at all! My opponent looks at my cards, then down at his cards, gets a VERY puzzled look on his face, then cries out "Oh my god! I thought I had pocket queens!!! Oh, man that was last hand!!"

The entire table (including the dealer) was laughing so hard it took a solid two minutes before we could actually start the next hand. This guy was very good natured about his faux-pas, too. We ribbed him the rest of the night and he took it all in stride and laughed right along with us. What a fun session. :)

Hahahaha, last night i had a funny hand involving pockets Qs as well. Its 4 handed NL and i raise on the button with A7o with one caller. Board comes 4 10 K, he checks, i bet he calls. Turn comes ace (BOO YAH) he bets i call. River rag and he makes a real big bet, i think about it a while, and decide the guy has been drinking and previously went all in with K4 (while not short stacked) cause according to him, "i figured i'd catch a king" so i called and he says "I got the straight, pocket queens" I kicked myself for my call then realized, wait a sec THERES NO JACK ON THE BOARD, man he looked stupid.

That's great! I think it happens to everyone every so often, tho... I'v had times where I bet and raised the hell out of a hand only to realize I was holding a Q and not the J I needed for a str8, or something like that... it's really embarrasing when you announce "I got the straight!" and the dealer says, "No ya don't." :)

That's really funny.

When I get a free play from the BB and flop top pair no kicker, and there is something to fear on the board, I usually like to play for a checkraise. Basically if a late position player bets it, I can force out all the draws and have a shot at the hand that way. I also scare the pants off the bettor and if he's holding a weak kicker that is better than mine I can often make him lay it down on the turn (assuming he's a foldable player of course). If he's going to call with any Q there then I'll check the turn to him, but that's also the sort of player who will be afraid of betting it and getting checkraised again so now I get a free river to try to hit my kicker. If you lead out with a bet and get raised, you have to call. If there's enough money in the pot to lead at it, there is enough to call and look for improvement ... again it depends on the player - a raise from a rock and I'll fold PDQ. But here's what I'm getting at. Any player who will raise you there will bet out himself and by raising you can drive out the draws and set yourself up to make a confident bet on the turn. If you check and it goes around without a bet, you do give a free card, but in exchange for that you get to bet the turn if a brick falls because it is almost certain that your top pair without a kicker is good.
