Multi Table UB vs PP, Dr_Monkey, 13. Aug 2003 08:48

I would like to play a multi table tourney this weekend. I have done pretty well lately in my $10 SnG and want to take a shot at at $20 multi table.

My only multi table experience has been at UB. They have freerolls and 25-100 pt multis. I have done pretty well. Finishing in the top 10% a few times. These were NL tourneys.

I have played a few $1 Limit tourneys. Making top 100 out of 400 players 3 times. Not a big fan of limit and I think the $20 I am looking at is NL.

Any advice on what to expect? The SnG are extremely wild at PP as everyone knows. Are the multi tables as wild? Is it best to sit and watch the first few rounds, playing only high pairs, then getting aggressive when blinds are going up? This seems to work well in SnGs.

I feel that I have a good understanding of the game and have the discipline to play only quality hands. I have done well in my last few SnGs getting a read on the style of players at the table, i.e. who raises with what, who are tight and possible steal victims.

I favor the multi's much more than the SnG's. More time to move your chips so it isn't as big of a crapshoot.

I think the best strategy is to potentially play a bit looser in the first round only (as long as it isn't expensive) in an attempt to hit a monster and double your stack. Then, from the second round to the fourth or fifth (depending on your stack), play your normal tight aggressive style, stealing blinds where appropriate too. As you hit the sixth round, the blinds generally will start to become more punitive so if you haven'rt built a stack, you need to be more aggressive with more marginal holdings (TT, JJ, ATs, etc.). Don't go overboard with this, but don't play too conservatively which will guarantee being blinded off.

If you get close to the money, then your stack size becomes quite important relative to the remaining players. If you are a short stack, you have two options: try to hang on to make the $$ or if you get a premium hand, try to double through. If you have an average or big stack, I tend to be more aggressive especially agains smaller stacks because they are more likely playing too conservative.

I would recommend Sklansky's tournament book as it has helped me tremendously.

Good luck and let us know how you fared.

Steve

They are probably fishier than the sit-n-go's...expect people to do really stupid things all the way to the final table. Probably not a good idea to bluff too much.
