I read the online version of Cardplayer magazine regurarly, but I'm wondering what is left out from the printed version. I thought about subscribing, but for $249 I want some value that I don't get online. After all I can chase a lot of inside straight draws for that kind of money.

Are all the articles made available online, and the rest is just advertisement for cardrooms I'll never visit, and tournaments I'll never enter?

I wonder why it is $249? That is why I don't subscribe. Although I have read a copy. I'm guessing that they don't have the volume that a Time or People Magazine has to to cover the printing costs. But it can't be hurting for revenue as it is chock full of advertisements.

I think that cardplayer really wants to casinos to suck up the cost and have the players read it for nothing. That way, they can ship in bulk and not have the deal with a lot of individual subscriptions. Jacking up the price makes it win-win for them: they keep individual subscription maintenance very low but make a fortune when someone insists on paying the price.

It's very similar to the way the airline industry works: the biggest money is in cargo. If they expect a lot of cargo for a given flight, then they book only as many seats on the plane as they need to still have a full cargo load. Any more seats filled means less cargo, so the seat price on that flight suddenly skyrockets to pay for the cargo that can't go if that seat is purchased.

$249?!?!? That's insane. My cardroom doesn't have it either, nor is it available at Chapters or any other large bookstore I've been to. Dammit.

You'd think that with the increasing popularity of poker they would price it down to 10% of that and have commercials for subscriptions to it on during WTP and WSOP.

In response to the original question, you aren't missing anything. All the articles and some of the features appear in the online version. Be happy --you're getting it online for free. It's whats known as an advertisor supported publication free at your B& M and online

Dez,

You're not missing anything. All the articles are there. I happen to be fortunate enough to get it at my local cardroom as well, but sometimes I enjoy looking for *all* the articles from one particular writer all at one time. Good luck.
