| ... why online poker plays it straight. $10 NLHE at Paradise First hand, I get A8 in late position, flop comes 9J7 with two hearts and I call a small bet. Turn comes an A (putting a second club on board). Flaky flop bettor goes all in, and I take a while to make up my mind. I think he's full of it, and if he's not, I've got outs to fall back on. He turns over 89o and gets no help on the river and I double up. For the next 30 hands, I'm absolutely golden, and I build up my original stack of 1,000 to over 3,600. Then it happens -- my dominating hands are being sucked out on left and right. First, AA goes down to 99 when two 9s hit the flop. This after a called a nominal raise and he went all-in. I couldn't hit the re-raise button fast enough. Then, an extremely short stack goes all in with me in the SB holding J4s. I call the extra 75 and the flop comes K5J, two spades. But my opponent, holding Q10, gets an A on the turn for his straight, and I don't improve on the river. Next, another short stack goes all in for 170 with A6 off. I'm holding 55, and he catches a 6 on the flop. Fine. I'm still at 2,400 when I catch the worst of it. I catch K7c in the big blind and another small stack goes all-in. Flop comes KQ2, and I figure if I'm not ahead, I'm only behind to the all-in bettor. Fire out 300 ... EP player calls. Turn is a blank, fire out another 300, EP calls. He's down to 55 in chips at the river, which is a J. I check, he bets his last 55 (a crying call, I figure), only to turn up QJ. I'm down to 1,500. Later, I'm in the small blind with K9. BB (EP player from last hand) calls my raise of 425. It's checked down vs. a board of J73Q2 rainbow, and he shows me A-high. This is the one hand I'm convinced I blew it on -- I should have bet the flop. Now I'm flatlining, down to 584. Miraculously, I catch AKo on the very next hand and immediately shove it all in. One caller, the BB, turns up JQ and catches a Q on the flop. And I'm out of the money in fifth (FIFTH!?!?!?!?!?!) after holding a 3-1 chip lead at one point. Sure, it sucked, and while some of you might get the idea that this is a "Woe is me bad-beat post," I'm not intending for it to be (although I'd rather vent online than let it carry over to my play). But not once during all of this did I think online poker was rigged. Stuff happens. I'm not as consistent of a winner as I would like to be and I'm still relatively new to the game. But I've played online enough to know that if you're not a winner, it's because you're doing little things repeatedly that cost you money (my pratfalls are being too liberal with completing my small blind and betting Axs from any position). If you're a good player, you will suffer more beats than most players -- but I've been playing long enough to know that you'll make up for it eventually. | ||
