Phil vs. Phil?, KidJ, 12. Aug 2003 08:22
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
First time posting on here, so I've got a couple of questions I'd like to ask... will put them in separate threads though.

2 weekends ago, we had our monthly poker night and this question came up: Who would you rather see sit down at your table (assume 10 handed, NLH), Ivey or Hellmuth Jr.?

I chose to play Hellmuth rather than Ivey. The rest chose Ivey. Ivey is quickly becoming my favorite and plays any two cards like Aces. Phil is a little more predictable IMO.

Thoughts?

I would rather play against Hellmuth. I think Ivey is a better player who is harder to get a read on. He plays anything from any position I think Hellmuth is a little more predictable.

Wow. This is one of those threads that's great for chatter, but for anyone to say he/she feels more comfortable with one or the other is nuts.

Who cares about up 'n coming? I'd rather play against Ivey, because Hellmuth's shining wrists are more imposing.

Hmmm, which do I prefer, electric chair, or lethal injection???

I love it!!

Personally my poison would be Hellmuth. I think he would be easier to put on tilt if you could get a bad beat on him.

.........."The electric chair or lethal injection" !.........funny stuff TK!

If it was a ring game, I'd much rather play against Hellmuth.......no question, but in a tournament they'd both be really tough. Each one of them possess alot of natural talent with an excellent feel for the other players cards, and they both play their hands exceptionally well..........but I wonder if Hellmuth tilts just a little in the tournaments.......I dunno.

i agree with buckeye mike, and not only because he is a fellow buckeye!! i would rather sit across from a hellmuth. the darting eyes and agressive play of ivey is so unpredictable. both would be a pleasure to play with, until i look down and have no bankroll left!!

Honestly, I wouldn't really want to play either of them! Those guys ar eall that and a bag of chips when it comes to NLHE, I'd rather watch them beat each other up. :)

Having said that, if I had to play and got to choose, I would choose Helmuth, mainly because I've watched him more than Ivy. In addition, I think Ivy is very unpredictable and generally scary. I also think it would be easier to push Helmuth's buttons and get him to make some bad decisions (I can trash talk with the best of them, and fling it right back at him). It probably won't help in the long haul, but it would be fun to see if I can get him to screw up.

I'll take Phil, Easy E, 12. Aug 2003 09:58

Well, if i HAVE to choose a heavyweight to go against, I'll take Hellmulth. He seems to tilt a lot easier, may be easier to read.

But, that's based on no real information other than television and Phil's articles.

I'd take Ivey, their both incredible readers but some of the things hellmuth does as far as reading seems unreal. I think with ivey you could probably checkraise him for some profitable plays when you hit a solid hand and you know hes gonna bet.

I would rather play against Ivey, Helmuth's wrists proves he knows how to consistanly win. Not to say Ivey wouldn't bust my ass, but i may last one hand longer.

I think one of Helmuths great attributes is that soo many people want to bust him because they don't like his arrogance. Sure he is arrogant, but he is argueably the best tournament player around (unargueably in the top 3).

I agree... you know you will lose, so you should want to play against Hellmuth just to say you have, and if you make a move and win a few, you have stories to tell the grandkids about.
