I heard that Matt Damon and Edward Norton went to Vegas after making the movie Rounders because they figured they knew alot about poker. They went to Vegas and lost alot of cash. Is that true? Does anybody know the story?

I actually think that each of them was fronted money by the studio to play in the WSOP, and they both went out early. I think it was all for promotional purposes, or they wanted to play and they got to.

They had a small piece on Damon and Norton during the W.S.O.P. ESPN coverage that year, I believe it was 1998. Damon was doing to about 6,000 in chips and went all in with Pocket Kings against Doyle Brunson who just happened to have Pocket Aces - there is no shame in losing to the Moses of Poker with the 2nd best hand, Varkonyi did the same thing in the 2003 W.S.O.P. and his KK lost to Scotty Nguyen's AA as well.

Norton mentions that he got busted out in a hand in which his 9s full of 10s full house ran into a pro player who had quad 10s. Both players mentioned something to the effect of playing against pros was like a minor leaguer trying to hit a Randy Johnson fastball or something to that effect - they knew they had no chance but were grateful for the chance to play...on someone else's dime. To the best of my knowledge neither has played in the W.S.O.P. again, I guess they got their fill because they could certainly afford it these days.

I think I remember hearing something along those lines as well. Man.....they'd have to lose a TON of cash to even make a dent in their wallet!

They both entered the 1998 WSOP and busted early on the first day.
They spent an hour or so with Phil Hellmuth ahead of time for some quick pointers, but obviously it didn't do them much good ;)
