| I'm having an ongoing debate with a friend on mine regarding limit vs no limit tourneys. If a top professional can choose to play in a limit or no limit tourney against 9 non pros to win a 1 million prize, which format would most pros choose? I say limit because they aviod being snapped on one miracle hand and can outplay the others over the course of the tourney. My friend says theres more skill and strategy in no limit. I think the luck factor is much greater in a no limit tourney. | ||

| I would say they'd prefer no limit (it also depends on the pro)....it puts a premium on reading people (probably a more advanced skill with the pros)...Also it allows them to effectively hammer draws...where as in limit the non-pro could effectively neutralize the pro (when on a draw) by check-calling a flush draw for instance. | ||

| You'd get a different answer from different pros. I have generally heard that limit tournaments are considered more of a crapshoot; but I don't think that is true for my play. I am much more consistent with limit tournaments. I can usually survive one bad-beat and still have a chance to win. I feel like I have to fold strong hands in NL alot just because they aren't quite strong enough to go all-in with. So in my case I would choose limit, but I think the majority of pros would choose NL. | ||

| Yes, but in NL you can choose when to roll the dice (when they are heavilly weighted in your favour) and thus decide intelligently when to chase a draw and when to release it. In limit, playing correctly means playing dangerously and playing conservatively means playing incorrectly. As a result, in order to win a limit tournament you really need a lot of luck. You can win a NL tournament without much in the way of cards. | ||

| No. The luck factor is much greater in limit. To win limit tourneys consistently is given very high regard indeed. Why? Well, you can't fold your opponents off of their draws very easilly in a limit game, so a run of good starting cards and bad luck knocks you out, plain and simple. If you're playing a bunch of chasers in NL you can make them pay too much for their draws an get the hell out. Your mistakes are greatly amplified in a no limit game. To be honest I hate limit tourneys just because there is so much random luck in them. | ||

| But it seems like in NL there's always a bad player willing to call my pot-sized bets with a bad draw. And when they get there, it costs me a lot more than it would have costed in limit. Maybe I've just played too many NL tournaments at Party Poker and I've become fearful of too many fish in the same tournament. | ||

| Yes, but you always run the risk of that. The point is that when you're in a hand against one of those ninnies and you identify him as such you can just shove in a massive overbet or let him call but be willing to fold if a scare card comes. At no limit there is no such things as a player so bad you can't beat him :) | ||
