| Just found this forum and it's some great reading. I gather some of the regulars are big-time players, but are there any low limit grinders? I'll be making my second attempt at it in a few months. Curious what 4-8 up to 10-20 games are best nowadays? and what your styles to beat these good games are? I usually play by the book starting a game but in my favorite type of game(3-4 rocks, 3-4 fish) I'll limp constantly and make a lot of lose calls on the flop for a chance to punish, or bluff later. other than turn check raises and obvious isolation plays I rarley waste time with thin the field ploys. One last thing, does everyone else HATE AQ in these games? With the pots regulary big it usually seems correct to chase when you flop blanks. I lose almost every session with this hand. yet profit on 69's, go figure. | ||

| I'm a low limit semipro ... I try to put in 50 hours a month, when work isn't eating up too much of my time. I play the vast majority of my sessions in the 10-20 up in Brantford, Ontario. And welcome to the board. | ||

| Thanks, and I'm originally from Detroit. Didn't even know they had poker up there. | ||

| Yup. There's poker in Sarnia, which isn't far from you at all. Then there's poker in Orillia, poker in Brantford, and poker in Port Perry. And for the end of this month, there will be an amazingly juicy game at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) in Toronto. If you feel like taking a small trip to Toronto to see the city and whatnot and want to spend some of it playing cards, the end of August is the best time. I belive the ex starts this coming weekend (though you won't see me there for a while - I'll be in Vancouver for all of next week) and finishes at the end of labour day weekend. As far as play in general, I can't tell you anything about Sarnia because I've never played there, but if you wanted to make the 3 hour drive from Detroit to Brantford and play for a weekend it would definitely be worth your while. The 5-10 is comically soft most of the time, the 10-20 is definitely decent a lot of the time and sometimes I see 20-40 and 30-60 tables that I'm salivating to play on (though my bankroll only permits me to play 20-40 when it is criminal not to and never 30-60). | ||

| I'm living in Virginia at the moment, so the roadie is a little far (: But thanks for the info. I'll try to get up there sometime around my brothers wedding, if I can sneak away. BTW- I've heard a lot about Sarnia, all Hockey related though. | ||

| I think $10 is sufficient. I would recommend paying out for only the top 3. | ||

| in loose online games, I would say overplaying AQ is one of my worst plays (and I do it way too often). The hand usually goes like this - A limper or two in front me, I raise with AQ (suited or not) and get 3 callers, including the blinds behind me. The flop comes rags and rainbow. 2 limpers check, I bet out, everyone calls! Obviously, time to give up the bluff. BUT...the river comes another seemingly harmless card and the the two limpers check (again). Often, I will bet the turn (stupidly) and naturally, get a bunch of callers, maybe a few fold. 9 out of 10 times here (if not more) one or two have a low pair on board. If these guys won't fold a bad starting hand against 2 bets, why would they fold when they catch a piece of the flop? Not happening. I think the bet on the flop is correct but the turn is detinitely (I think) time to check and either fold with lots of action behind you or, if you have 2 overcards and lots of passive calls, to see the river and bet if a Q or A hits. Is that right? | ||

| With 4 loose passive opponents, I would check the flop here. You aren't going to chase them all out and you probably do not have the best hand. What happens if you get raised? Then you've put in 2 bets with just overcards. If someone wants to make a bet in late position, you can see how the action develops when it comes back to you. If it's just one bet, you have proper pot odds, and the board is uncoordinated, you can slide a card off. If you don't pick something up, don't call a turn bet. You might be drawing dead to an Ax type of hand who already paired the x., and you can't feel very comfortable value betting your hand even if you do hit an ace or queen. It's not worth the big bet. You missed the flop, let it go and save your money for a better spot. Lee | ||

| And those people who picked up low pair could easily have 8,Qs or something like that. When you hit your queen, it can frequently make the calling station two pair, so you really have to be careful. | ||
