Why a rake?, Jiggah1, 11. Aug 2003 05:48 | ||

| I don't understand why an upstart online Pokerroom doesn't try to establish a customer base by offering no rake for a while. It seems like all the poker rooms (even the ones with no customers) have the same raking arrangement, I know for one I'd be lining up to play. When I think of all my winnings raked I shudder. | The standard business model right now is to attract customers by offering free money on deposits that gets released over time by taking it out as raked hands get played. That is, essentially a rake-free game, but then each player starts paying the rake again after they've got their bonus released. A non-raked game might attract some new players, but the problem with it is that you can only attract players who intend to make money playing poker. With a deposit bonus you get people coming in who want to put in $500, get paid $100 to do it, lose $200 and then keep playing to try to get out of the hole. Then you get the players who pay $500 to get their free $100, make $200 and decide to cash out their buy-in and keep playing with their winnings. You also get the players who pay $500 to get their free $100, decide that the game is good and play there regularly. What you don't get is players who want to deposit money to a site with no obvious advantage to try to make it the hard way. New customers are attracted by the carrot of something for nothing. However I could see a promotion whereby players are rewarded by putting in a lot of time. I could see a deal that says, "The 100 players who earn the most points (generated by playing in raked hands) in the month of August will keep the rake for all pots that they win in September" ... that would encourage everybody to play more, paying more rake, to try to get rake-free games for themselves, but then you only give the rakefree status to just a few players so it doesn't cut into your bottom line too much. | ||
