I just want to get everyone's opinion on Live Straddles. I played in a game last night where the guy on my left live straddled every single BB I had. There were also three other players at the table doing this. Also, what is the advantage of the live straddle?

As far as i can see apart from the occasional pyschological factor it is almost always a bad idea to straddle, i would be very happy if loads of people were putting in extra money with hands that did not justify it !

I had some guy on my right doing this to me in a NL tourny last month and i just waited and waited unti i had a hand and then reraised he called and he went out of the tournament.

In answer to your question when to i do it ? Never

Boy, what a bunch of DUMB players. A live straddle is probably the WORST play you can do.

I know it's frustrating to have him straddle every one of your big blinds, but keep in mind, he's just throwing away his money creating more action for you.

That's when the UTG player posts a blind-raise before the deal.

When you 'live straddle', you put in a raise before seeing your cards making it twice the amount of the big blind to call. If no one raises, and the action comes back to you you are allowed to raise again. This is the only time you are allowed to raise your own raise and it is only allowed in cardrooms that allow a live straddle. Otherwise it is just a blind raise

Moz, what about a dead straddle? I guess it's just called a blind raise... since you can't reraise yourself.

Also, if you know it will screw up some or most of the other players, it might be smart to post it occasionally, ESPECIALLY if others are in there doing it as well. Image gains, popularity gains, etc....

I know that there are some valid stradegies involved in straddling, and your post below this one names some, but personally it's not something I like to use. Conversely, I love it when someone else straddles regularly. At some point, his straddle gives me an opportunity to really punish him. It's a lot of fun to reraise the straddler then come at him with everything I've got every time he tries to make a move.

I love them, personally. When you know there will be more money in the pot AND know where pre-flop raises on top of that will be coming from (many straddlers feel obligated to raise, others that will be playing also feel obligated to raise), you get several benefits:

a) out of the blinds, you can make more decisions, often deceptive ones, about the play of your hands.

b) In the BB, you can make better decisions about your hand- decisions that are tighter than normal, which may be a good thing to get back to when you're in the blinds.

c) Many people aren't comfortable playing in straddle pots, often being too aggressive or too tight.

By the way, I think there was a thread here a month or so ago about what to do with straddle strategy... or I'm blurring with another newsgroup.

Of course it's advantagous to you when another player does this regardless of his position in relation to you. But it is MOST advantagous if he does it when you are on the Button or late postition. Your best move in the situation you describeis to try for a seat change a couple or more seats to your right when one comes up.

spawgan, there is no aadvantage for you to do the straddle. those who do it just love gambling and excitement, and hope to bluff you and others out. ljh

There isn't much advantage to it except that it increases the action at the table. When somebody straddles your blind it really screws you over so you want to get off of this guy and into a different seat. Especially because his straddle puts more dead money on the table for other players. Ideally you want to get to his left so that you can raise his straddles when you have a good hand in an attempt to isolate a little.
