| It would seem many of the best in the world today have extremely heavy math backgrounds or are mathematical geniouses. But how much math is really necessary in poker? Isn't playing the people and understanding their psychology far more important? My total question for the forum and experts is this: In what areas of poker must you be fully mathematically capable? Obviously there is knowing the percentages and odds of the outs you have, and perhaps knowing things like the probability that opponent X holds hand A such and such % in yada yada situation, but does it really get much more sophisticated than that at the higher levels of poker? I think we all know Chris Moneymaker wasn't doing complex mathematical functions when he won WSOP right? | ||

| The important math in poker is all stuff you would know from highschool. What is important, however, is having the facility with the math to recognize when to use it. You need to be able to take the raw numerical data of your hand, combine it with the data you read about your opponents' hands (and thus the psychology) and use it to determine the true correct move. Math will take you very far in poker, but you don't need a math degree or an understanding of multivariate calculus to be good at poker math. You just need to be able to calculate odds quickly. Psychology will take you much less far that math will, but is still an asset. | ||

| Odds play a much bigger factor in limit games. In NL games odds are a still a factor but many other factors must be calculated in also. | ||
