I have just started to play out here on the net, have been playing in casinos and with friends for a lot of years, however I have noticed this thing about me and I want to try and correct it. During about my first hour of play, I do well and make money, I am having fun mainly because I am winning. Then comes the hand, last night it was a straight in the first five cards, there was raising at the table, what I did not know that the one player against me had three kings from the flop and another had now gotten his flush on the flop.
By the time fourth street happened I found myself all in which is not hard to do when you are playing no limit. The cards came out, the guy had his flush which was bad enough but what was worse he did not win either the trips paired on thier hold card and beat him too, it was like being hit with a truck, what I spent two hours winning was now in another stack in two minutes.
This is when it happened last nite, well I replaced the start cash and went to get it back, but after that beat I never regained myself to where I was and lost what I replaced as well.
I do this all the time, after so long I go into a trance or daze or get hit with a truck and I drop all I have, I am not a bad player and know I can win but what do you do about the person inside yourself who dont know when to quit what do some of you guys do to know when it is time to call it a night

By the way for all the internet skeptics out there I played for six hours last nite and never did note any player who had extreme luck by chasing so I dont feel there was any rigs. I played on planet.

thanks for the advice.

Hey woodstied,

Sorry for your bad experiences. That being said, even though you may have flopped a straight on the flop, with a 3-flush already being present, maybe it would have been a better choice to just let it go right on the flop...especially in NL. It's hard to commit too much of your stack while a 3-flush is staring at you.

I'm not sure, but you may need to study up a bit more and try to really focus on the possibilities/hands that may be out there. If at any time you don't feel that you're playing your best...you must either take a break and come back when you know the tilting is totally out of your system and you can come back to the game and make good decisions....or.....you'll just have to quit all together for that session, because playing while not at your best will only leave you with too many losing sessions and you'll lose your confidence if it continues. Try to understand as to "why" we are there in the first place, and that's too make money....and then figure out the BEST way possible to achieve that for yourself.

Better luck to you,

thanks good advice need to get rid of the greed I really love to play the game and I am kind of like a kid on allowance day come the day I can. The daze is an enemy I know that. Also got kind of an addiction to playing. I am not a large player 25/50 or 50/100 cents that is.

Hey....being greedy can be a good thing in poker.....as long as you're "putting it in there" with the best of it....know what I mean?

I have a feeling that, the more you play poker, the less likely you'll feel an addiction to it.....especially if you start to really play the game to win because then it can become rather boring at times, but the reward will be there in the end....."that's" the good thing!

And even though the limits you play in now may be small potatoes to ya.....the more you learn and the more you apply what you've learned, and have the ability to play the game really well....the better chance you'll have to move up in limits as well. And *that's* a goal that you want to set for yourself if you plan on taking poker more seriously, but that'll be totally up to you.

thanks for the advice and I will take it, I do win a lot early and then give it all back in a bout an hour maybe move up in class some and make some more quick and then I can break it off at the first sign of tilt and come back to start fresh. This way I will be playing with more than the chassers of the world. Not that I dont chase myself at times. I dont have much luck with playing aces or kings or ace king, seems when I do it is all that shows up and then the river bites me with some guy who called with a 2/3. Thanks again and I will let you know how I do next weekend.

The simple solution is not to play NL with real money. I will never take money to the NL table that I don't plan to lose. Why? Well, things can go sour so fast that your mortal nuts gets the crap beaten out of it and you lose everything you brought. I'll play a few hundred in a fun NL game, but if I lose everything I brought to the game I'll make sure I still have rent money in my pocket.
