Styx-

Here's how I would do it, but my disclaimer is this: I keep much more than most players, because I REALLY hate to play scared. It is absolutely not necessary to bring this much, just what works for me:

Moz: never played this high, but I guess I would like $500 on the table and $1k in my pocket.

I play in alot of different limits so that would be hard to give you an exact amount but, I always have money on me but I also leave money in the safety boxes at my casino where I'll be playing at anyway, so I'm never short on cash if I chose to play in a higher limit game if one looks really good to play in. For me, I don't think it's a good idea to ever carry alot of money with you if you can help it, but if you're talking about a $1-2, or a $4-8 game, then I would just bring whatever I felt comfortable with. Enough to play the limit correctly. I wouldn't want to be short on funds during the game but I wouldn't be bringing my life savings with me either! How much exactly will be up to you, and what you're used to, I suppose. But I would probably bring more (as far as Xing that amount by the BB were concerned) if the limit was say $20-40 because you'll experience more swings there than opposed to a $1-2 game.

other than home games or online I have only played once and I brought $100 and played 2/4 and it was a good amount.

My general rule has been:

First buy-in is 15x the big bet, with another 15 BB behind it in my pocket.
Higher limits- 20/40- I might buy in for only 10x, because the game shouldn't be as loose/crazy in general as lower limits

I really like to feel unstressed at the table......I usually make sure I have at least 50 big bets!

Hi, Roy --

I do the same thing most of the time. But it doesn't always stop me from feeling stressed. I can lose 50 big bets in world-record time. But, I think I play a much more volatile game than you do.

I like to win a lot. But, if that doesn't happen, I like to lose a lot, so I feel like the time wasn't wasted.

Straight Flushes,
Mike Caro

I like to win a lot too.....If I don't win a lot .....I like to win a medium amount......If I don't win a medium amount.....I like to win a small amount......I never like to lose any amount...Least of all a large amount!

Hey, Roy! You've got to lose large amounts sometimes, just to prove you can take it like a man. If it doesn't happen through bad luck, you've got to got to work and manufacture a huge loss.

This is necessary. Ask around, and you'll see what I mean.

Straight Flushes,
Mike Caro (who strangely teaches that it's just as important to make a loss smaller as to make a win bigger)

I like to buy in with a short stack. I usually buy in 15 big bets, but have another 35 in my wallet.
