Missed opportunity?, mongi, 8. Aug 2003 13:39

I am in a loose aggressive 4-8 holdem game. I take a free play from the BB with Jc 5c. Five people see the flop which comes 5d ks 5h. I decide to bet because the players at this table tend to play loose on the flop but will let their hand go on the turn if unimproved. I didn't like the slow play option here also because I didn't have that great of a kicker. Only the utg calls me. I had never played with this guy before but I could sense he was setting a trap. From what I have seen it seems he would have raised me if he had a King . The turn is a blank. I bet again and as predicted he raises me. Not knowing this guys game I decide to just call He could easily have me outkicked. A king hits the river. We both check; he turns over T5 suited.

He said he would have mucked if I would have bet the river. He thought I had a king because I didn't reraise him on the turn. So we split the pot.

Did I blow an opportunity here or was checking a prudent play?

Hey mongi,
With that kind of board, I would have pounded the trips. The only thing to fear is a higher kicker, but usually people don't play Q5, K5 unless it is suited. So A5 is a possibility, but I would reraise the turn to find out. If he capped it then your check on the river is a good idea, but if he called your raise, then I bet out on the river. Be aggressive with those trips. You will get bit once in awhile, but these are your moneymakers (LOL). Honestly, make people pay to beat you,
