Online LLHE...
Ok…I understand why the winner of a pot may want to flash his cards if he was bluffing…but I don’t get these guys that flash their second best cards…especially if they had no business calling in the first place…what, if any, significance can be gleaned by this…do they want the other players to know that they call when they are beat?…if they are “advertising”….what exactly do you think the message is….

thanks in advance for your answers….

agreed. i don't advertise at all, especially online. what do i have to gain from it?? nothing. especially with some of the players who play online that have very short memories. god bless them..

I think you kind of answered your own question... most of the time these players never had any reason to be in the pot in the first place... they don't have the poker knowledge/skill to be a good player, so they flash their cards without even realizing what they are doing, or how flashing helps/hurts them... they just want everyone to know how close they were to winning... which really doesn't matter.

On the heels of this, I like to flash hands when I win a pot (without a showdown) that I raised preflop. I want people to know that if I'm raising, I have a hand. I find it near impossible to thin the field by raising in the lowest limits. If they have suited cards, they are calling any amount of bets to see the flop. It's scary. My thought is that if people take notice of what I am raising with, they might have a stronger tendency to fold something moderate pre-flop. This is perfect for my game, since my particular strategy is to raise pretty much only in an attempt to thin the field (AA and KK notwithstanding).

Sometimes online I'll show my hand in order to prompt a frequent displayer to show me his.

I find that with many bad online players if you fold and show they will show what they had. This is nice, especially in no limit play, as it gives you an idea of how they were playing. Of course I'll only show mine if I played everything by the book and there's no information of value being given away.

For instance lets say that the cutoff opens for a steal and I'm in the BB with KhJs ... and it is early in the tourney so blinds are small and stacks are big. He's overagressive and I call to see if I'm good. Now the flop comes down QhJd2s. I lead out with half a pot bet to see if I'm good and he comes back at me over the top. If I think I can get him to show I might flash him my cards in the hopes of him showing what he went all in with and then deciding how to play him next time he jams his stack in at me.
