No Limit rebuy options, chasepoker, 8. Aug 2003 06:04

Given the following situation

"Unlimited rebuys for the first hour ($10 each) give you 1000 more chips. Note that you must have 1000 or less chips to rebuy. One optional add-on ($10) at the end of the rebuy period gives you 1000 more chips. You may add-on regardless of how many chips you have. "

and with a lot of people playing very loose early on is it correct to re buy instantly ( ie start off with T2000 ) i know the obvious appeal of starting with T2000 as opposed to T1000 but is the added bonus worth the added cost of doing so ? I believe myself to be one of the better players in the tournament so should i just wait and see if i can double up using my skill ?

Note i am willing to rebuy quite a few times and am not " worried " about losing all my chips early and having to re buy.

Many thanks
Chase

PS Sorry for sounding like a Terminator film by constatnly saying T1000 - Hasta la vista baby

Chase,

The only time I will rebuy early is if EVERYONE else is doing it. Most of the time there is no benefit that early in the tournament with the blinds small. I also limit how many rebuys I will do based on the pay out of the tournament.

I will ALWAYS do the add on buy unless I am so far down on chips that it won't help.

This is from my BM experience and not online.

Good luck!
Don

Now you see i only ever add on if i am on or below average chips !

Whilst being farily conifdent about my play i really dont have enough experience about the re-buy in NL tourny's can anyone here go through what they believe is the best tactic for re-buy tourny's ?

Hey chase-

That looks like the UB rule on rebuys, correct?

I've played a couple of $1, $5 and $10 rebuys at UB, and in my experience, about 90% of the players will rebuy immediately (which is nice because the prize pool increases).

I will generally rebuy before the cards are in the air, and any time I go below T1000. I've been fortunate that I have been able to rebuy in play twice so far, which means I've only dipped below T1000 twice.

I also always take the add-on. Everyone else will take it, and this keeps me in proper position.

i play a lot of rebuy tourneys on UB...if you play them right they cost the same as the regular tournaments but you win waaayyyy more $$$. anyway, i never do the rebuy right away. if i drop down to 500 or so i might do it....but generally i sit back and wait for *ultra-premium* hands. i don't worry about mixing things up except for possibly a suited ace or limping with JT on the button. i don't limp with drawing hands from anywhere else but late position since there seems to be a lot more pre-flop raising than normally.

i also don't try to do any stealing since no one will give you any credit. everyone goes steal crazy and even when you pop them back they won't back down. the upside is that the entire table is more than willing to pay you off if you flop huge. ideally you will hit at least one or two sets or a nut flush and you can double or even triple up a few times. in a rebuy tourney i played in the other night i only won 3 hands the entire first hour but doubled up or all-in busted multiple people on all 3 of them.

plus you can really start punishing people after the rebuy tournament if they are still in super loose mode. check the hand history for mucked hands and see who is still limping in with KTo and other assorted, dominated garbage.

i always do the add-on though. 1000 chips is a few extra blinds i might need if things start heading south later on :)

just my $0.02

ok. Here is some rebuy theory.

First off, you want to rebuy right away there. The reason? It is in the nature of rebuy tournaments that they start out very loose and agressive. You're looking to make a pile of money because you have the safety net of a rebuy. Thus when you flop top pair top kicker, bet, and get raised, pushing all in isn't that horrible a move anymore. You're looking to grab a huge stack and then sit on it or you're looking to take a shot at it, fail, rebuy and take another shot. Especially on UB (and I recognize the rebuy structure from there) you've got so many punters calling all in with bad flush draws that you're going to have to ram and jam.

Now, when the rebuy period is coming to an end, if you've got something like T1200 then you are SOL. If you are going to add on you'll only have T2200 which is squat when the blinds are T50-T100 and the average stack is over T4000. So what you want to do then is gamble. You can make a questionable raise preflop on the 3-60 blinds to 200 and if you lose the hand you can rebuy before you add on and have T3000. If you catch something nice then hopefully you can double through.

If you bust out close to the end of the rebuy period, don't buy back in. It isn't worth spending three buyins to get to T3000 when the average stack is over T4000. Save that money for another tourney. When it comes to the rebuy time, look at your stack.

If you have less than T1500 I would advise against adding on, but it all depends on the prize pool. If there were 350 players in the tourney, 100 are gone, and there have been 1000 buyins then you can still try and play for it. If you have more than about T6000 then don't bother paying for the add on. From this point on it is a regular tourney and the small increase to your stack size isn't worth the additional money. Ideally I never want to buy in more than 4 times to one of these events (and I don't think I've ever bought in 5). Basically I start off buying in twice, almost always add on, and often drop my stack enough to need to put in a single rebuy.

Another important thing to note is that a lot of players won't cool down at the end of the rebuy period. They'll keep firing away so when you tighten the hell up after rebuys end you can often peg off one or two dumb players and very nicely help your stack - or catch a bad beat and bust.
