Maniacs online..., Ostebovik, 7. Aug 2003 21:27

So that's just what I had the other day before heading out on vacation.

I sat down to play some 3-6 online and waited for the BB (about 4 hands). I had the chat on to see if I could get any information before I got my first hand. I recognized a couple players but most were new to me. The player to my right raised in MP and then capped the betting when it got back to him. He led out the bettting and when raised by button (who 3-bet PF) he reraised. He led out on the turn, was called and the river and was called. Showed Q6o for Q hi. Lost.

Next three hands same thing but not called by table and won large pots. A chat by a player on my right was 'support your local maniac* and he responded 'lol'. Usually I ignore this type of stuff but it fit here.

So I get dealt my first hand in the BB and QTs is what I find. By the time it get back to our local maniac it's already raised and he 3-bets... I fold. So 3 players see the flop. by the river I had the nut flush - well I would have...

Good fold? How do you play against someone who is in maniac mode working to get even, which this individual was? tighten up? play more hands? I went into Rock mode until he left when I started to clean up. It took all I could do to protect my blinds w/ less than AA KK or QQ cause I know that if I started that I'd head down that slippery slope right into the tree with a leg on each side...

So... What's your experience? What's your opinion?

Thanks in advance.

Gerard

You've got a few options here...

1) Find another table. Most players either love a maniac or hate a maniac. Sometimes, players learn to like a maniac. You need to ask your self what your comfort level is and take things from there. This isn't limited to just maniacs. Any time you find yourself uncomfortable at a poker table -- for any reason -- you should leave.

2) Sit back and wait for a premium hand. The bad news is that you could be waiting a long time. And even if you do hold out for a great hand, there's no guarantee that you'll win.

3) Tighten up a little but still play your game. Of course, be prepared for potentially large swings. When you win, you'll win big. And when you lose... well, you get the idea. Remember, maniacs can't always have the goods. Moreover, most maniacs play the way they do for reason that go beyond poker. That's important to always remember.

4) Try to get a seat to the left of the maniac. This will help when it comes to playing borderline hands. You might play 9-10 for a single bet on the button but not if Maniac raises it up. Being to his left is a huge advantage.

Hope this helps!

I always assume (in my mind) that the limit is bigger....so if 3-6...with maniacs...I just think ok...it's 6-12...or 6-6 as maniacs don't raise as much on turn....I love those games!!!...It is always refreshing and usually profitable to play with people who with there actions don't care about money...or losing it

I don't now if it is the right strategey but I essential ignore their preflop raise and play the hand as if they have a call hand at best. I just pay attention to the others at the table to determine my play with the understanding that they know there is a maniac on the loose. If I know I'm going to be heads up with the Maniac, I'll play a little looser than normal. If I know there will be a ton of folks seeing the flop I usually will tighten up knowing there will be a big pot waiting for me when I do get the nuts.

Generally, I consider maniacs my personal ATM machine.

Here's my strategy for dealing with maniacs...

I play fairly tight until I can get the seat immediately to the left of the maniac. After this point I will reraise them on many of my marginal hands and all of my good hands preflop in an effort to go heads up with them. Most people tighten up around maniacs and will be very reluctant to call 2-3 bets cold, even if they have 1 already out there. At the flop, depending just how wild the maniac is, if I hit any sort of hand I just keep raising and reraising them all the way to the showdown. If at the flop I have a hand that's going nowhere I just let it go and try again. I almost completely ignore they're behavior unless it varies for a substancial period of time.

Using this, I end up seeing many more flops than I would normally see and I end up folding 2/3 of those giving the maniac the wins he wants(I don't think they care about the money as much as the wins). The 1/3 that I do win more than make up for the losses I take.

The rest of the table usually considers me another maniac and ends up playing double tight to accomadate the 2 of us. If one of them do stay in then I can usually figure them for something huge and if they stay in to fourth street then I better have the nuts or close to it.

--I'd like some feedback about this method of play. I've only had a chance to use it a few times but each time it was very successful. I could see how this could cause very large swings if you didn't catch any flops but there would be times where you catch many more flops which I think would more than compensate.
