Michigan Trip Report, Mark Gregorich, 7. Aug 2003 16:56

Seeing as I live in Vegas and am therefore unable to produce "Las Vegas Trip Reports," I figured I' d report on my visit to Michigan to spend 2 weeks with my wife's quite extensive family in a town smaller than my high school. File this trip in the "If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger" category. Anyway, this trip has been the first time all year in which I've taken any significant time off from poker. Activities have included hanging out with my kids, taking my stepson and nephews to Cedar Point, a big amusement park in northern Ohio featuring the tallest and scariest roller coaster I've ever been on, and whooping on my sisters in laws at hearts and spades.

Last weekend was an informal family reunion at my father in laws house, and a few of the attendees wanted to play some poker. I was just returning from playing basketball at the park up the street, and found that a no-limit holdem tournament was about to commence. Since arriving in town, I had been amazed that EVERYONE seemed to have developed this new fascination with the game. I'm sure most of you have similar stories, of people who have never played the game happening to catch the WPT or World Series on TV, and deciding to give it a try as a result. A few of my wife's friends asked me about some of the players: "Does Phil Hellmuth always whine like that? / or: "Do you play with x?" One of my nephews wants me to get Phil Ivey's autograph.
I think its pretty cool whats happening to our game.

By the way, here are the tournament results:

VASSAR OPEN
$5 no limit holdem
entrants:16

1. Grandpa Harper $40 + $25,000 WPT seat
2. Mary Gregorich $25
3. Uncle Jim $10
4. Aunt Margaret $5

I came 5th - another %@#!$^ bubble! It was actually challenging playing this event. Sometimes I'd be confronted with a large bet by someone who had never played holdem before. I honestly had no clue what to do with medium strength hands here. One of us was buried in the hand, but I wasn't sure who. In the end, it came down to how much I liked this particular in-law. I found that in this tournament, personal vendettas probably played the biggest role in my decision-making process. Maybe its good I'm a long way from a poker room right now.

thanks for reading; Mark Gregorich

Wow, how interesting it was to find your letter on here. I grew up in Vassar and know your wife's family well. My husband is a avid holdem player and plays often. I believe i seen you down at the tent festivities on Sat night. Best wishes to you and your family. Good Luck with your holdem career. Formally a Van Horn

That made for a good read Mark. Glad you're having a good trip away from the green felt for a while.
