Caro's Book vs. Video, ezcheese, 7. Aug 2003 14:40

So I am going to buy Mike Caro's book of tells or his 2 video set... I'm not going to spend 100+ on getting both of them... While the video seems to be most helpful because you actually see in action what tell he is speaking of, the book seems to be useful because you could take it anywhere (i.e. college lecture class) and read it and I've heard some people say that the book has some interesting reading other than strictly tells (amarillo slim?)... anyways, what would the best investment be??

On a side note, besides the book of tells, would you recommend super systems or how to win a low limit hold em? by Lee Jones or whatever... im rushing to leave work so im not thinking straight but i hope you guys can help.

IMHO

Jones book is excellent for low limit HE, where as Brunsons is better for NL HE, even tho all forms of poker are covered.

Other good books I have read

any Sklansky (mainly limit again)
Ciffone and Stewart (PL and NL)

and Holden's Big Deal is a good non technical poker read.

I have never seen any of Caros videos

Good luck at the tables

Simon

Is there a reason? Advantage to having both?

They are both excellent. Each gives a different way to look at things.

Why buy more than one book on hold'em? For the same reason, one text or video will never be comprehensive enough to give you the full picture. Get all the literature (or in the this case videos) you can afford.

Even the bad books have something to offer, if you can recognize the bad advice. This bad advice is usually accompanied by some backwards logic that many "uneducated" players will use. This knowledge will help you to understand how other play.

ez-

Thank you for the compliment in the other thread.

Unfortunately, I have yet to acquire the Caro merchandise. I will have both eventually, mainly because of the wonderful things I have heard on this forum about them. I understand they are a wonderful compliment to each other, and well worth the investment of having both.

As far as the books go, keep in mind that the Jones book (one of the best, BTW) is intended for beginners playing low-limit games. Super-system (which I have not yet read, but will soon) is probably a more advanced-strategy kind of book. If you haven't read Jones yet, read that first. Also, Sklansky's low-limit HE book.

There's are some important reasons for this:

1- The Jones and Sklansky books are geared toward new players and geared toward low-limit games.

2- Books like supersystem and Sklansky's advanced book are geared toward experienced players playing higher-limit games.

3- Advanced strategies are rarely, if ever, effective in low-limit games where most players are unaware of anything beyond their two cards and the basic rules of the game.

I would suggest to read Sklansky later, when you will go to play 3-6+ online or 5-10+ in ground casino. Lower limits are looser and less "thoughtful", so advanced techniques like semi-bluff will fail there. As a general book which is suitable for low limits (after Jones) I think Gary Carson's "Complete Hold'em Guide" would be good (I may be slightly wrong in its title). This book helps to see hold'em problems from several points of view and be prepared to analyse and adapt to any new situation on your own.
Actually you may read every book on poker you can find, but this is really important to read it in proper order, and then learn to choose and apply knowledge suitable for specific game you are in. Best wishes, Soleo

Ezcheese,

I have the book. It's very good. Haven't seen the video. Whichever you decide to get you should deffenatly check out the free tells video clips on Mike Caro's website too:

Lots of great stuff there.

Caro's book is very useful, but it sounds like you are in need of some solid grounding in the basics still (don't take this the wrong way). Have you read Lee Jones yet? The easy Sklansky book?

I would also suggest his major poker seminar video. It has a wealth of information on how to handle different player archetypes.
