| Hi am coming to LA in September to go on the cardplayer cruise...am expecting to stay/play at the Commerce...what is the commerce like for a 3 day stay...is the night life existant there at all?...on the site they advertise what looks like some lively bars within the club!...visited the bicycle club a number of years back and it was very quiet outside of poker | ||

| I was hoping to go on that cruise but apparently all but the most expensive cabins are booked. Oh well, there is always next year. Good luck and have fun! | ||

| Hey Coach, The Commerce Casino is a great place to play poker. They have close to 200 tables and the customer service is exceptional also. The rooms there are very nice as well. But the area that you're going to be in, (Commerce, California), is an industry town that really doesn't have much to offer there as far as nightlife goes. The Commerce does have a sports bar in it, but it's really nothing to write home about IMHO. But you will be in the suburbs of LA, and if you are able to get a car and drive for a little bit, I'm sure you'll have plenty to do and see. But if you're there primarilly for poker, than you picked the best place to be! The Commerce, The Bike, The Hustler, Hollywood Park, and Crystal Park are all within 20 minutes of each other, so if you get the chance to see them....do it. They all offer many games and limits to chose from. I usually play right at The Commerce when I go there and make the occasional trip to The Bike 'cause they have really good mixed games there that I enjoy. Have a great time and good luck. 4 POKER | ||

| 4 Poker is being somewhat kind. The City of Commerce is an absolute dump. There's nothing to see or do outside the casino. But, this is LA! Rent a car and take in the hotspots. Have a great trip and let us know how it goes. | ||

Mk, I really wasn't being "kind" (LOL)........Commerce is not a dump, it's just an industrialized area with not much to do.....but there is a difference between the two!........Now Bell Gardens, where The Bike is?.......That's a dump! But, the poker is still great in these places and if you want to find nightlife, than LA has plenty of it. If he's going there to make money, then he really should be looking into checking out The Commerce Casino as well, 'cause the poker there is phanominal.......then he can worry about his party time later! That's my advice and opinion anyway.......... 4 POKER >

| I agree with you'all. They are both excellent poker joint's and both are in dumps. It is the one place you can get your AA's cracked inside, and your skull cracked out!!! Scrubbie "I'd rather be Rich, then Stupid" | ||

| This would be an interesting subthread- where to go to get your head cracked on the way out? I vote for Hollywood Park, hands down. Driving down Century Blvd. back to the 405 at 1 or 2 AM can be a white-knuckle experience. Commerce may be a dump, but I've never felt unsafe leaving there. Eli on 8. Hollywood Park vs. Commerce, mkpoker, 8. Aug 2003 16:33 | ||

| I play at Hollywood Park more than anywhere, just because it's closer to my house. Personally, I think the 2 a..m walk from the casino exit to you car in the unguarded dimly lit parking lot is the most dangerous part of the trip. You might want to try driving back to the 405 via Manchester--it's slightly less dicey than Century and moves faster too. Just keep your head down and doors locked. ...But the biggest "heads cracked" quotient in LA has to be Crystal Park in Compton. If it were the last poker hall on earth...I'd go back to bridge. | ||

| Bit of HP advice- valet the car. It's $2 (same price as Commerce BTW, which seems to be getting a bad rap here), and you can use your comps. I ain't going near that parking lot. Only good thing about the drive back to the 405 at 2 AM is that generally there is a fair amount of police presence and activity going on. Good for me, bad for someone else. Eli on 8. | Ok, haven't been in Inglewood much at night, but the signs are there during the day too. I happened to be at Hollywood Park for a totally different reason (middle of the day) and decided to pick up lunch at the local fast food place (Taco Bell/Pizza Hut). This was the first time (and only one so far) where I have seen a fast food place with bullet proof glass and those little carousel to pass money in and food out to customers. It felt like I was doing business in Fort Knox!! Not a place I would like to be in late at night with large (or even small) amount of money on me.... -Magnus | ||

I have never had any problems being in or playing at the Commerce. If you valet your car up front, you won't have to worry about walking in a dimmed parking lot. You'll see when you get there. Have a good time. Like I said before, Commerce is not an unsafe area, it's just an industrialized area, and if you use common sense, (as with anywhere you go), you'll be fine. It may not be the prettiest of places, but.....

OK. Now I feel remorseful for having used a bit of hyperbole and failing to defend my beloved City of Angels. So, for the record, Los Angeles is the greatest city onEarth. And people who travel the world say it's got the best poker action anywhere, which I believe. The problem is that local governments tend to welcome cardrooms only when they're financially challenged. As a result, they're located in troubled cities like Inglewood, Commerce, Hawaiian Gardens, Compton, Gardena, and other places that don't have much else going on. (All of these areas are inside the LA Metro area but outside of LA City proper). Hence, to really enjoy the city, you MUST rent a car and venture out when you're not at the tables. Within a short drive of Commerce, I'd suggest exploring the Hollywood hotspots in Los Feliz/Silverlake, and the beach scene in the South Bay cities of Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Hermosa. Come to LA. Play great poker, soak up the sun. You'll have a great time. --matt
