Please can some one explain what exactly are the blinds, and why if in the first round of betting on texas hold'em you have to match the small blind, because then the person who put up the big blind would put in more than everyone else. Please help clear up my confusion.

Thank you

Amber-

Blinds are like Antes, except they are larger, and are only posted by the first two players. Basically, they are forced live bets to make sure there will be action on the hand.

Players must match the large blind, not the small. In fact, the small blind must match the large if he wants to stay in the hand.

In The first round of betting in Texas Hold em you have to Match the Big Blind to call, Not the Small Blind. The two players to the left of the Button have to post a blind. The person thats farther from the button has to post the big blind. The player that closer to the Button posts the small blind. The small blind is half of the big blind. So basically you will post 1 Big Blind and 1 Small Blind every 10 hands. Blinds are played to ensure there's action on every hand... Quoted from the World poker tour... Heh. Basically it ensures You can't just keep folding 50 strait hands. Without Blinds you could make it to the final table without play a single hand (in Tournaments). It also brings the element of people bluffing to steal the blinds if the blinds are big.

The others summed it up, but I'll chime in and say this. I think your confusion coming from the fact that the big blind is a small bet and the small blind is half a small bet. So in a 10-20 game, SB is $5 and BB is $10. Then to stay in, everybody has to match the $10 or fold (or raise). On the flop the bet size is $10 and on the turn and river the bet size is $20.
