Short term luck factor: Hold'em v's Stud, Allyc, 6. Aug 2003 17:29 | ||

| In his article at http://www.playwinningpoker.com/omaha/, Steve Badger states that "Holdem has far more random luck than Omaha (or Stud). " And in his article at http://www.playwinningpoker.com/articles/03/04.html, he states that "So along comes Holdem -- a fast, easy to understand game that has huge bucketfuls of short-term luck." In Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players, David Sklansky writing about 7-card stud states "But the large short-term luck factor, caused mainly by the fact that it is easier to 'draw out' on the best hand than it is in a game like hold'em, needs to be addressed." Two conflicting views, I think. Any takers? | ||

| I consider myself a very good stud player & an average hold em player. I try to strictly stay w/ stud b/c of the players who love to play a lot of hands & catch in hold em. Every player had bad beat stories in holdem but not as many in stud, b/c you have a better read on what your opponent is playing in stud & it's easier to lay down your hand. In hold em J2 o/s can be a winner, but J29 rainbow needs much more of a miracle to win. Best! | ||

| Holdem's luck is early- with 70% of your hand determined by the flop. Stud extends the "luck" towards the end, because 7 non-shared cards come to each player AND the cards in my hand make your hand more likely to occur. | ||

| Sklansky is using an oddball definition of luck. In stud, and Omaha, hands change on the end in what is normally a mathematically knowable way. Player sends two pair against a flush. It's not "luck" that they make the two pair win. If their four cards are live, they will win a mathematically known percentage of the time. In contrast, in Holdem when the board on the turn is 9732, A6 will draw out on KK sometimes. That is luck. A6 has no reason to know that the hand will be good if an A or a 6 comes. When it is good, it's just lucky that it is. Holdem is full of these bits of randomness while stud and Omaha have drastically less. Additionally, the most obvious luck in Holdem is that many, many preflop situations are about 50/50. Obviously, the winner of a coin flip is simply determined by luck. The skill in Holdem comes in by you extracting more money from your opponent when you win your 50% than when he wins his 50%. That is pure skill, but the winner of the coin flip part of the hand is pure luck. on 6. | Would tend to disagree with sklansky for the simple reason that quote 'drawing out' is such a prevalent aspect of Stud, that I really don't think it can be contributive to any aspect of luck. It simply is. That's what stud is about the best hand usually trying to hold up to the draws. | ||
