Nut worst PLO8 hand, stdioh, 5. Aug 2003 13:36
View ( Message | Thread )       Return to Thread List
I was talking to Wreny about what the worst 4 card hand was in PLO8 and we were talking about such things as 277J-rainbow and other such swill. A few hours later I was playing in a PLO8 tournament on UB (and came in second - W00T!) and I got the following happen. I was dealt 2222 in the BB and the puck limped with no previous limpers. The SB folded and I just folded face up for the value of humour.

Basically, it was at a point in the tournament where I didn't want to bluff at anything against this guy for any reason. There is no way I could make a low, and there is no way I could make a high that had any reasonable chance of winning at all. Basically the only way I could take it would be for the board to have trips and for my opponent not to have a pocket pair or for my opponent not to have a pocket pair and not pair the board, make any straight or any flush. So I figured a face up check-out was in order. And as I've said before, there's almost never an excuse to check out.

But there you have it. I cannot think of 4 cards that have a greater chance in losing at PLO8 than 2222.

Now that is a bad O8 hand! I get frustrated every time I get 3 of a kind, I can't imagine how I'd feel with 4 of a kind looking back at me.

I have kept 3 of a kind when I get 3 Aces with a 2 (suited). I'm still learning O8, so I wasn't really sure what to do with that hand.

By the way that was a fun SnG last night. It was the first time I've played at UB. I usually play at Party, but I had deposited some money for the UPF tournament (that I ended up not getting to play in), so I thought I would give it a try. I had to fight myself for much of the game. At Party the blinds go up in proportion to your stack much quicker. My internal clock kept urging me on as if the blinds were much higher. The competition is definately a bit better at UB, at least for that tournament.

It was a good showing for UPF for both of us to make the money, though I think if I could have been more patient I could have waited that other player out... I'm sure I'll play more at UB. I hope to see you around, though I'm not sure I want to play against you anymore!

Heheh...yeah. Actually, I thought that you played very solid poker in that sit-n-go and it was a particularly tough table as those things go. Normally they are much softer. It was good that we came in 2 and 3 though I played the heads up game terribly there so I got what I deserved.

Ya, I felt like I could have played a lot better when it came down to the three of us. I knew the third player had really lowered his standard for raising hands; and I let that influence me more than it should have. I definately wasn't used to playing a SnG for an hour and a half and still having four people left. At party the game would have been over well before then; both because the players don't have that much patience and the blinds would have forced it.

But the software at UB is so much nicer, I may just have to play a bit more there and see if I can have at least similar success to what I get at Party. I usually play limit tournaments though, so that was particularly fun for me.

The problem with limit tournaments is that the crapshoot factor in them goes way up in comparison to NL tourneys. I'd say that if you are a winning player in there against bozos who can make money in a limit tournaments then you could make a lot more applying your skills to no limit tourneys.

Also, I've fallen into a new mould on UB which I really like. At one table I'll play a full big ugly tournament, and in two other windows I'll play PLO8, and stud (maximum of 1 stud table though). If there are 2 good PLO8 tables then I concentrate on them. Inevitably I make a lot more from the side games as I do from the tourneys, but when one tourney pays off it is nice.

Essentially I get to cash out my tourney wins and fund my tourney buy-ins with the games I play simultaneously. If you can manage that, things can get real nice real fast.

The only thing that's killing me are the stupid aruba satelites. I've played about 8 of the things. I played 1 $33+3 that pays 3 entries and came in 4th, one $22+2 that pays 2 entries and came in 3rd, and a bunch of $11+1 that pay one place and come in second in about half of them. I've yet to win a seat and I'm at the point to pull my hair out because of it. I resolved the other day that I'm just going to pony up the $100+9 if I want to enter a super rather than monkeying around in those satelites. I'm sure my +EV is betting in a cash sit-n-go anyway and there's no reason I can't use the cash I make in one of those to buy in to the aruba game anyway, eh?

well there is only one way to deal 2-2-2-2 (not counting the order they come in) so it would just be:

1 in (52 choose 4) = (52 * 51 * 50 * 49) / (4 * 3 * 2 * 1) =
1 in 270,725 or .00000369%

Slick,

I don't know the exact odds of that, but I will say this......in all my years of playing that game and putting in thousands and thousands of hours, I 've only been dealt quads about ten times,(maybe even less), and quad dueces?....maybe once or twice. But I think he was just bringing that up for a topic of conversation though, so yeah, quad dueces would just about do it!

I've gotten dealt roll-ups 3 times in a row in a seven card stud game......now what's the odds of that? Mathematicians?..........

Odds of starting off rolled up are 424 to 1. This is similar to the old "what are the odds of aces back to bacK" question for hold'em, but the odds that you will start off rolled up the next 3 stud hands you play are 1 in 76765625. If you're already looking at a rolled up starting hand, then the odds that the next 2 will also be rolled up are 1 in 180625.

Tonight my buddy had Pocket Rockets in 2 out of 4 hands. He burnt me with one of them. I told him he couldn't get them for 500 hands now.

Coincidentally, I got dealt AAAA the other day. I almost played it 'cause of the kickass bluffing opportunities. But then I clued in - hey - I'm at 1 cent 2 cent PLO8 - can't blow these guys out of the pot with dynamite :O)
