About three weeks from now I will be off to Milwaukee as a college freshman. Through highschool people normally had enough money to gamble a bit with, though the stakes were never above about 20 dollars. Im wondering how much poker goes on during college, what kind of quality of opponents can i expect, and what kind of stakes i can hope for, anybody just out or still in college that can tell me?

I'm in my 5th year and JUST found my first real game... although none of them are really college kids, mainly guys who work with the IS department at wake.

When you do get people to play, the stakes aren't that high... most people will put up 10 or 20 bucks, I find it hard to get any higher stakes.... which is especially weird because there are a heck of a lot of rich kids at my school.... yet few of them like to gamble.

The play is obviously awful, everyone assumes you bluff every time, or they are just ridiculously tight. Your experience could easily be different from mine however.

I'd imagine with the WPT in full effect.... you'll find MUCH more play at college in the years to come.

First, i want to introduce myself to the forum, ive been reading the posts for two months but never posted anything, so hello...

Poker in college is a joke...

ive been playing poker for only four months now, but i play online everyday. I'm taking classes this summer at school and theres a lot of downtown between rugby and class. ive only been able to find two real games...the first was with 6 poeple for 10 bucks each ( i took home 40). The second was with three poeple for five dollars. other than that, poeple are school have no money, and five dollars = five pizze slices = eating for two days.

Poeple do watch WPT a lot though and are interested, but they are terrible. The first game i ever played i had the nut flush and kept getting re-raised by some kid, i would raise and he would re-reaise every time. at the end he flipped over a 10 high, and i took 20 bucks.

good luck at school

Hey Bond,
Find a local B&M or just get a kick ass computer and play online. Good luck. DJpoker

I look for the 'White Hats' at the local casinos every Friday night. If they are any indication of college poker, you should do rather nicely. Just remember, DO NOT DRINK!! However, if you must drink, drink less than them.

I was constantly looking for a poker game during my university life. I had lots of people to play backgammon, cribbage, and darts with, but I always had a really hard time getting together people to play poker for more than pocket change. When I did find a crowd, I fell right into it. I still play fun home games (though not profitable because these guys are pretty good) with them. Generally they consist of math grad students and profs. Basically, if you want a card game, try the math department to find people, but then expect them to slaughter you :)

No lies. Only games I've been able to find have been with a bunch of physics grad students, and while they're still not great, they're not terrible either. Highest college game I've played in was a 1/2, wouldn't expect them to go much higher. College kids are pretty poor!

Having just gradiated from college, I can relate my experiences... most college players fall into two extremes I find: guys without a clue and guys who think they have a clue. The ones without a clue are the calling stations and bluffers who see every last river there is, half of the time raising the hell out of it. Usually these guys are just wanting to have fun, so even though the games are crazy, they are beatable and most importantly- fun.

The ones who think they have a clue are the guys who watch WPT or 'Rounders' too much and think they're hot shots. Usually they've read some Sklansky or know some good starting hands and possibly even odds, but most of them lack any real mental game. With a bunch of these guys in a game, it's easy to take control of a game as they are usually quite tight and too 'by the book'. A mix of these guys and the crazy maniacs though, that's pretty interesting to play against.

Don't expect to play for big money though, college kids are poor after all :)
