Do you play w/ a maniac?, GoodBoyTim, 4. Aug 2003 13:11

| Let's suppose... In a short-handed higher-limit (step-bet, i.e. 10/20) ring game (with only 6 players), everyone has equal amount of money but only 200. And once you lose, you're done, no more re-buy in, it's the last bread and butter you have. There is a maniac in the game, betting and raising pre-flop 90% of the time and calling until the river, do you play? Do you gamble (I call it gambling because with the limited amount of fund, you can be busted out easily by this maniac if he goes on a winning streak of even just 2 or 3 hands)?????? | ||

| I wouldn't mind playing with a maniac like that, but the problem is, the short term results for him (one session for you), could leave him on the plus for your case $200. I wouldn't take my last $200 and sit in a 10-20 game, but that's just me. I'd rather chose a lower limit game where I was able to be more of the aggressor and had better control over my opponents.....especially if it's my last $200. Stability would be more of a factor for me here and I'd try and build up that bankroll more cautiously (and correctly) until I reached a decent amount to play in anything higher. I don't think it's smart to put your bankroll at risk for just one session of poker.......but I've seen many that do! | ||

Hi, GoodBoyTim -- This is a personal decision that only you can decide. Remember, with a bankroll of only $200, you might want to take a shot, knowing that you're most likely going to lose, even if you have a theoretical long-range edge. You might get lucky right away and zoom toward the stars. There is no "correct" advice to give. It's all about how much you prize security and how much you can tolerate the pain of losing in pursuit of sudden success. There are ways to enhance your chance of survival and have a better shot at earning more in the long run, but these ways really don't make much sense in this case. That's because, you aren't likely to stay broke forever, even if you lose. There are ways outside of poker that allow you to build another small bankroll and take another shot. For this reason, small bankrolls are frequently not worth defending aggressively. This advice runs against "the grain," but it's true, nonetheless. And, yes, you DO have a better chance at nursing your $200 and surviving if you avoid the game with the maniac. But, that doesn't mean you SHOULD avoid that game and the potential for quick gains that it promises. It's really up to you to decide. As long as you're comfortable with your decision when you make it (not looking backward after the fact), then you probably did the right thing. Straight Flushes, Mike Caro

| Case $200- no, find a safer game (at a lower limit, by the way) Session $200- sure, go after the maniac | ||

| Depends how my life is affected if I lose the $200 and when I have to pay rent. If it is really the only money I have and I owe rent tomorrow then you'd better believe I'll play. Though with a roll of $200, the 5-10 would be a better place to be ... even there it is only 1 buy-in. | ||
