How do you play this?, Eaglesfan1, 4. Aug 2003 12:11 | ||

| Ok, Im in a tournament at Bugsy Club. Were and hour and a half into the tournament and I find myself on the BB. Im dealt AKs ... Woohoo. 4 people limp and I don't want to raise and draw against someone with a pp. (I was playing very conservative) So I check. Flop comes AK8 nothing suited. The blinds were big at about 1,600, anti was 200. My stack is 37,000, I bet 2,000... Just bigger than the big blind... Everyone folds and Im disappointed a little. Now, Should I have checked and tried trapping someone? Or just not even risk getting outdrawn by a set or strait or flush, But with that flop, Flush was very unlikely, So was a strait... in the end it said Eaglesfan1 wins 6,800... Which 1,600 of that was my big blind... Would you have checked and tried trapping? That was a very small bet though keep in mind Anyway I just lost it, Had A9 clubs 892 flopped I moved all in... I Had 7,000 left after the 4,000$ blind, Anti's were 500 I had to make a move quick. One person called with AJ suited in Clubs. Other one called with 3 7os and lost a lot. I Finished 71st of 397 and Satisfied because I played pretty well... | ||

| Hi. First, you should raise pre-flop. You have one of the best hands in hold'em, and certainly one of the top 4 in NLH. To not take advantage of this because you might lose is weak poker, IMHO. If you raise, either you will win right now (which is good, because you no longer have to make your hand), or you will get action from a hand which is either a big dog or a tiny favorite. (Assuming nobofy limped with AA or KK.). After the flop, you bet too little. You muight think you are trapping, but you are pricing in the gut-shot straights that are probably out there. If my stack is large enough, I will call you your bet with QJ or QT, planning to bust you if I hit my 10-1 shot. And you still do not know what to do if you are raised all-in (by 88?). Of course, checking to trap is much worse as you are giving the gutshots a free shot to beat you. Bet half the pot or more here. Yes, sometimes you make the best hand and win when you want to win more. But in NLH, having everyone fold is almost always better than the alternative. BarryT | ||

| Hey, I would have put in a raise with AK suited, especially in NL. You don't want to have too many players in the pot with you and you'll be giving yourself a much better chance to win the hand if you flop just a King or an Ace and you'll also be able to have better control over the hand once the flop comes up because you were the one who initiated the raise, and many players that just call your raise will check it to you on the flop, putting you in a better spot there as well. Once the flop does come up with an Ace and two rags, with no flush draw.....you still want to bet enough to make it incorrect for them to call you here. Flopping top pair in NL is good, but if you bet a small amount, you may get enough callers now which will leave you in a tough spot on the turn. You won't exactly know where you stand with AK, so if you make a bigger bet on the flop and someone does call you, say just one opponent.....your AK will be in better shape than if you had to contend with too many others involved now. Remember.....you didn't flop a set of Aces, you flopped top pair and your hand needs to be more protected here IMO. Winning the hand right on the flop in a NL game with top pair is fine. You hand was not strong enough to try and use a trap play now, but I definitely would have put in a raise with it pre-flop. You need to drive out the garbage so you don't beome the calling station now and/or get bluffed out of the pot by someone who may make a move now because noone showed any aggresion pre-flop. 'Just MO. | ||

| Yeah, I probably should have raised pre-flop. But this table was soo Aggressive and people called a lot. It got me way off of my game and had me re-thinking my whole strategy. All I could think was, If I raise 8,000 Pre-Flop and no A or K comes after the flop, Im screwed. Even if I bet out with nothing I'll probably get callers, then there goes more $$$ down the drain, I can't check because Im on the BB and the first to act, They'll see that and raise me all in... Then what can I do but Fold... I was in the wrong mineset... | ||
