Why I leave My Chat Off, Big_Slick, 3. Aug 2003 15:57

I played in a $20 sit-n-go today on UB. I was on the button with J-Qs. I limped in with a few callers and got raised 5 or 6 BB's by the Big Blind.

This happened to be the chip leader who was bullying everyone at the table. I was in 2nd place and decided to call. I know that J-Q isn't a powerhouse hand, but I had been folding a lot whenever he would raise. I needed to show this guy that I wasn't a complete walk-over. Besides, he can't always have the goods.

The flop came 9-10-A giving me a 4-flush and an open-ended straight. He goes all-in and I decide to roll the dice. Well, the turn brings an 8 and I double up while he lost half his chips.

It was then that I realized that my chat was on (I always have it off). I was called a "lucky prick" and some other pleasantries. This from a guy who went all-in with 6's.

I ignored him, turned my chat off and stayed focused. I later bounced him out when I flopped trip kings. I couldn't resist and typed "I guess I'm just a lucky prick." I had my chat off so I don't know if he had anything to say.

Gotta love it.

I am constantly amazed at the way people take the cards that are dealt personally. Objectivity goes right out the window if emotions start colouring (or worse, dictating) playing decisions.

I think that in your case Big_Slick, your opponent was a beginner, since four flush and open-ended str8 is a valid play given correct pot odds and you proved - once again - the "Lucky Man Theorem":

The lucky man is usually the man that knows how much to leave to luck.

I have just returned from two weeks in Guadalupe, where I decided that instead of getting my Aces toasted, ... I would give the sun a shot ... :)

I packed my entire Poker library and went over a lot of tournament play statistics. As I was swimming in the ocean, I was surprised I needed to come up for air, considering the way I play poker ... lol.

Can't complain, ... Practicing for the WPO Warmup August 30th on www.thehendonmob.com aka www.bugsysclub.com ... :)

Glad to be back and I have a lot of reading to do on past UPF threads, to catch those pearls of wisdom, some of which get drop-kicked into my poker journal. How are you doing Big_Slick? Anyone we know done startlingly well since July when I went on vacation?

I'm doin' alright. I've been working a lot and haven't been playing as much as I'd like. We missed you in the UPF tourney. You'll have to sit in on the next one.

UPF tourney? Rats, that's right, it was on while I was travelling. Who won that? How did the regulars place? My participation would not have changed the final tables I fear ... lol. Next time!

of course, you missed all the bon mots I say to you when we play against each other.

btw Slick, what was up with that table? Wild fishy suck outs galore. Earlier I played against some of those guys and lost a bundle in an hour with hands like AK against 4-6os. I got dealt Big Slick 3 times in 10 hands and each time I was facing some hand like 9-6os and got beat. I felt the poker gods mocking me.

Btw, sorry about that hand we played. But it was the only winning hand I played for about an hour.

I am so clueless... I didn't even know we played together. I guess I should pay more attention to nicknames!

I've also had my share of some good camaraderie. You may be missing out on that. I've had the guys who practically apologize for calling my AA with there 66 and catching a third 6. Or when I get to final 3 on a Sit and Go. And the three of us go back and forth for half and hour. And we make sure to tell the others how great of a game it is regardless of the outcome.

Plus all the fellow UPFers that pop in to say hi.

i think my favorite are the pissing contests that end up taking place in the chat window. after bouncing someone from a SnG the other night i got all the classics: "you don't know how to play", "i bet you i make more money than you on here", "let's play head-to-head right now" and other assorted b.s.

i also turn it completely off now because it is more of a distraction that anything and i don't want to be the one who tilts when someone hits a 2-outer on me and his observing friends fire in the "great play" messages.

I found myself LMAO and in awe of the stupidity of some players this weekend. I sat down at my table and almost immediatley upon my arrival this guy and girl get into a pissing match. The guy had trip kings and tried to trap the girl who was playing behind him. She had two middle pair and amazingly guessed she was beat and just checked to his trap attempt. He got so mad that she didn't pay her off that he started berating her bad play. It lasted forever, with each talking about how the other couldn't play.

The funniest thing about it was that these two had to be the worst two players I have ever seen. She came in a pot with 3-9 of hearts and bet it all the way down without a three, a nine, or a single heart hitting the board and three overcards as well. This wasn't an isolated event, she literally played that stupid the whole time. He would raise the most insane cards trying to be a bully and seemed amazed that we wouldn't believe he had a real hand.

I finally had to turn off the chat. It was just too annoying.

When playing tournaments, I usually type "sorry for the dial-up delays", then turn the chat off.

Some think you can learn from what people say. I'd rather read their play than get sucked into their chat.

It's the Mike Caro thought of multiple tells meant to confuse you, and I'm more worried about their play than their chat.

I always love to see somebody making minimum bets (say T30) into a huge pot (say T400) and then losing it when I hit a gutshot. My response is usually along the lines of, "Sorry. I thought that was good. I had most of a straight. It's my first day as a professional poker player. I'm going to win a million dollars like Chris Moneymaker." They usually get much kinder after that :)
