Why do you like No-Limit?, Roy Cooke, 2. Aug 2003 10:51

No-Limit poker is making a comeback....The WPT and Interenet poker are creating more and more No-Limit players....The game was dying out big time, mostly due to the fact that in No-Limit the good palyers get the money much faster. What is it about No-Limit that you like?

NL "tournaments" are popular, but in the United States, NL ring games are not.....unless they're played over the internet. During some major tournaments you will be able to find a NL and/or PL game going on in the side action games, but there won't be many of them played on a daily, or even a weekly basis after that. When was the last time you saw a NL game being played in Vegas (that was not during a tournament), and if so, how often was it being played?

NL play is definitely more exciting, but honestly, I prefer limit play. I'm better suited to it, and make more money overall playing Limit.

I try to play a lot of NL now for the experience. I want to be a good overall player, to I am focussing on something new until I develop a decent skill set. I still play a lot of Limit, to pay for my NL mistakes... next, I was thinkning of taking on a new game (stud or Omaha). But, again, I will still play a lot of my bread-n-butter to pay for it.

Like Moz, I prefer LHE in ring games. But far and away prefer the strategy and excitement of NL in tournament play. Having said that, I really enjoy limit tournaments as well (and have had good success playing them).

I started playing some PL online in ring games and really like that too.

Also like Moz, my goal is to be a really good all around poker player, able to play several games well in several betting formats.

I agree as well. I prefer to play LHE opposed to NL when talking about ring games. NL can be exciting but for overall earn, I would make much more money in limit.....it's what I'm used to I guess.

I like no limit, and Roy was right by saying that there seems to be a little revival due to the high offer from the online games. I learned some things I can use playing no-limit that work much more effectively than they do in the limit games, although, I am still not that familiar to play big stakes no limit games as they would have too much impact on my life if I lose a few big hands. Check-raising on no-limit (all-in) are very powerful and a money maker, whereas checking and therefore giving a free card to your opponent in limit poker could be a mistake and technical disaster. In no limit when you have a super hand and check and give htat free card it can still give you a bunch of money.

I like no limit (tournaments only) for a few reasons:

1. It helps me control my budget. If I play a $50 tournament, that's the most I can lose (plus rebuys, etc). A run of bad luck at a fixed-limit table (even a low limit like 3/6) and you can lose a lot more a lot faster.

2. Let's be honest. We want to play the games the pros play on TV. If you want to be like Michael Jordan, you don't play HORSE, you play full-court b-ball! And if you want to be like Phil, Howard, the other Phil, and Chris, you play NL Texas Hold 'Em.

3. NL Tourneys make you feel like a part of "the big game." Where else could I ever say "raise $10,000" and push an enormous stack of chips into the center of the table.

I'm sure that many posters will think these are terrible reasons to choose a game. But it depends on your philosophy.

My bottom line is this: I'm likely to get more fun from playing a 1hr. NL SnG than sitting for an hour in a 3/6 ring game. I haven't added up the numbers, but it wouldn't surprise me if, from a strictly financial perspective, I'd have a higher average return in the ring games, by a slight margin.

I like playing no limit tournaments for the following reasons:

1. Most players play it because its "fun" thus they play hands they shouldnt and bluff too often. Both of which result in profit over the long term for me.

2. I'm a better NL player than limit, and am more profitable with it. I actually find myself more patient playing NL because I know how susceptible my stack is.

3. I play the tournaments online, because I find them to be perfect for limiting the swings in my bankroll. The most I can lose is 33 dollars per tournament, and with my talent, the most any swing in my bankroll negatively is 200-300 dollars. (note 10 player tourneys are what I am talking about)

Wow no wonder theres not much literature on NL holdem. Thats all I really play, I love the ability to take a mans entire stake (gamblers ruin as we call it around here.) Strangly enough I have been to several ring games in the area and none (especially strange considering im coming out of high school where few have a lot of money) have been limit, its entirely no limit, and if you ask me its a much harder game. But I guess limit is better for most who can't stand the idea of losing everything on the turn of one card or one simple misread.

Let me give you an example:

I'm sitting in a sit n go, dealt KK in mid position (blinds 15/30) and I raise it to 90. One player behind me calls, the BB calls, and a player to my right who has called every bet I made, and already bluffed on a nothing board on the river with QJ, and my AK won it with high card ace.

Flop comes A87 2 clubs. I have to put one of the other 3 players on an ace, and with these quality players, I wont be able to bluff out an A5 (which they would call with) so I check and it gets checked all around. Turn brings the ace of clubs, BB goes all in with his 400, the player to my right calls his 400 bet. Me and the other player fold.

The BB had the 10c2h and was risked his whole stack with 2 aces on the board, and hoping to make the 4th best flush, and hoping it held up. The player to my right took the pot down with the 86h, a third ace hit on the river, giving him aces full of eights.

Now why either of these players would risk 1/7 of their stack calling my preflop raise (everyone had about an average stack 600-800 chips) I don't know. The after the flop play wasnt much better. Perhaps I should have bet something on the flop, and they would have folded, but the odds of them NOT having an ace weren't that high, so I wasn't going to lose another chip. And the player to my right with the 8 I suspect would have called my 100 bet into the 240 pot. thus when the ace came on the turn I would of had to check it putting him on the ace. Now granted I would have checked, seen the 3rd ace on the river, and could have figured my kings to be good.

But we'll never know. This is why I play NL.

I have a question for you, Roy. Do you like NL? I'm just curious because I know that you're always playing higher limit LHE and was wondering if you ever ventured into the NL waters.

Thanks.

I prefer NL side games, because you can really make a tight aggressive strategy pay off.

If you play few hands in limit poker, you can get beat by calling stations on flush or straight draws. That rarely happens in NL because it is really difficult to call an all-in with a flush draw or straight draw.

I like NL for the plain fact that you can induce your opponent to do things that you want him to do (or make large mathematical errors) by the size of your bets. This is almost impossible in a limit game where it is really difficult to manipulate other players in most games.

What do I like about no limit? I like the fact that there is a lot of money to be had quickly if I am playing with a bunch of fish. I also like the fact that the human element (reads etc) is much more significant in NL than in a ring game and I consider the human element one of the stronger parts of my game.

And I like the fact that I can put somebody on a hand and then choose what pot odds to give him to draw.

I also like the fact that there are players who think it is a great idea to make massive overbets. When you've got them around you can sit on your ass, wait for the nuts, and hope to get lucky off them.
