NL SitandGo Play From Last Night, mroban, 1. Aug 2003 09:19

Okay, here is the situation: 5 players remaining in a UB Aruba $11+1 sitandgo (only winner gets the entry), I am the 2nd lowest stack at T1200 with the blinds at $50-100. I am dealt AKos on the button. The low stack (T1000) goes Allin, second player folds and the biggest stack T4500 calls his allin right before me.

I was planning to call the lowstack but when the big stack called him, I just figured I would fold and sit back and watch the small stack get busted.

Low stack has KK and bigstack has AQos. I watch first in horror as the board goes Axx, the turn another blank. Thinking I just blew my best chance to get a big stack and win the damn thing, I watch the river bring a Q!

So it turns out in this instance I would have been busted out. I ended up in third place going all in with a QQ against the second biggest stack. He had Ax and hit his Ace on the flop. Oh well.

But given that I was shortstacked and needed to win the whole thing, I wonder if calling was technically the right play. Obviously it wouldn't have worked out this time, but I wonder if next time I shouldn't call that.

I think AK would have to be an underdog against 2 allin bets. I was actually more worried about the lowstack than the bigstack, knowing if the bigstack had anything he would try to bust him out. Low stack was getting desperate but not completely desperate, so he must have had a pretty good hand.

If somebody goes all in and another person calls before me... I almost never call - even with a strong hand. I learned this by watching people on pokerpages.com in the beginning of a tournament go all in with J-8S and Q-10 off and bust guys with QQ, AK, etc.

I think it is almost always the right move to fold and wait for another chance to use the big cards.

I think you did the right thing. You may have been short-stacked, but you were far from desperation time. With an all-in bet and a caller before you in the situation you described, I would only call with AA. I'd even muck KK.

That is a tough decision. If it were a regular sit-n-go where the top three get paid, I would say that the fold was definitely the correct move. Since you're in a game where only the winner gets paid, chipping up right now is more important than mere survival. I think that you could go either way depending on what you knew about your opponents. In that situation I wouldn't call a call incorrect and I wouldn't call a fold incorrect.

stdioh, you are focusing exactly in on my question. Clearly, in a regular sitandgo, I would just wait for a better opportunity and figure I can easily hang on for 3rd place.

In this one, unless I was able to grab ahold of some chips, I was a real longshot to win the thing. That is why I am unsure if I did the right thing.

Funny thing was that a few hands later, I got 88, went all in and got the big stack to call me with AQ (I won). Exactly one hand later, I got 88 again, made a small raise (since I had double up) and he reraised me allin!! I decided NOT to call the second one, folded and showed him the 88 for the second time. He showed my AK.

Hmmmm. Thats 3 opportunities to double through this guy. I took one and won.

Anyway, I didn't win, so I have to second guess. Thanks.

Well, like I said, I think that you could go either way on that one depending on your opposition. The important thing is that you're thinking about it.
