| Do casinos use KEM playing cards? Its a bit of a drive to the nearest one for me but after my wife bought me a deck of KEM cards Hoyle and other cards feel like bricks to me but at $12-$14 a pop for them its not worth it unless the clipped or drilled used cards they sell in the gift shops are KEMs and way cheaper. | ||

| Never have seen any casinos use KEM cards or even offer casino-imprinted ones in their gift shops. I personally like them as well. | ||

| I know of no casinos that use KEM cards. KEM (plastic) cards are vastly more expensive than paper cards, but they last for years, literally. Casinos would never use KEMs because they need to switch decks frequently to guard against marking. I love KEMs, but it's just a matter of personal taste. | ||

| Most of the poker rooms I have played use KEM cards and it appears to me that most of the televised poker tournaments are dealing KEM cards. Each dealer has a "set up" of two decks with different color backs. However, I have never seen KEM cards used for blackjack or other table games. For what it is worth, I think the poker rooms like plastic cards (particularly KEM cards) because they allow the players to peek at their cards by lifting the corner without marking the card. If a card is damaged, they just replace the card. Since the decks are so durable, player requests for deck changes and new set-ups are honored by simply rotating decks rather than bringing in brand new decks and throwing out the old ones. (I have heard that high-limit games get brand new cards when they want.) Although I have not seen a casino selling used plastic cards, at least one web site, casinocom.com, does advertise used KEM set ups at a big discount off the new price ($5.95/set up). | ||

| KEM does sell cards to casinos, but they are very expensive and most casinos opt not to get them. KEM charges a huge fee for specially printed cards so it is only worth getting them in giant quantities so they don't appear in cardrooms that don't have 30+ tables, generally. As for getting them used from a gift shop, you absolutely won't be able to. They sell of their old cellulose cards from blackjack, etc, after punching them because those cards don't last very long. KEMs are supposed to last so if a card is ruined they will just replace the individual card and keep them at the table. If they were to, for some reason, ditch entire decks from the game - say cards that were just too worn out to play with, I doubt they would sell them off in the gift shops because they wouldn't go through enough of them to make it worth their while packing them up and selling them. If you really want to play poker with cheap cards, you can buy cellulose casino cards at dollar stores. I used to buy 10 packs at a time back when I played a lot of cribbage and if you get them all the same then it is easy to use decks for "parts" when cards get damaged and have new packs around to open for the high stakes games where you are sure you want a "fresh" pack. Really though, KEMS hold up so well that the $25 (Canadian) you would spend on them at a store is worth it. If you want to order them online, I will send you to my friend's store, www.pokerstore.net where he sells them for $20 Canadian (about $14 USD). | ||
