UN Tourny Question, Woodhook, 1. Aug 2003 07:00 | ||

| I just got knocked out of a UP tourny. I was in 50th place at the time with about 70players left. The tourny paid the top 30 places. I had about $1,700 and I needed to double up to get close to the money. I had AK offsuit in the small blind. UTG raised the BB to make a call $300. I raised all in expecting BB and UTG to fold. UTG called and showed QJ offsuit. I'm feeling good until a J flops and another J hits on the river. Should I have played this differently? | ||

| IMOP you played your cards as they should have been played. You could have raised 900 , but I think that would have still ended in your downfall , just put it down as a proper bad beat story. Unlike my stupidity this morning !!! ~ read "Clanger !!!!!" | ||

| What were the blinds? 150? They don't seem high enough for you to be concerned with blinding out soon. A raise by UTG seems like he is trying to steal, more so since you are holding AK. I think you risked too much. Especially if he had a bigger stack than you. He got lucky, but if you would have called and then come out with a strong bet after the flop, he might have folded. Probably even better would be to re-raise. Send a signal that you too have a strong hand. Then when you bet the flop, your pre-flop strength will help enduce a fold. Since the J flopped, he probably would have called, which gives you the option to check to the river or fold to his bets. AK has caused me trouble in multi player tourneys. I have played it to agressively with pre flops all ins. A call and a bet is far less expensive than your all in pre-flop. But it will keep you in the tourney if you miss the flop. on 1.
