| Thanks to stdioh and wren I played Pot Limit OmahaHL for the first time at UB. For some reason stdioh left as soon as I sat down, but despite having almost no clue (I literally opened Phil Hellmuth's book to the page on his recommended starting hands) I managed to triple my buyin in half an hour. But the game is amazing and I am completely addicted. I basically was just playing hands with 3 wheel cards including an Ace. I was amazed at how well that strategy worked. The thing I really had no clue about was how to figure out based on the betting what my opponents had. I really couldn't. There was almost no pre-flop betting - i suppose that might give away a strong hand like an A2KK or something like that and in PL you can always build a pot on the flop. Seemed lots of players saw the flop for .25. But a pot sized raise on the flop scared most away. That usually got the pot either heads up or three way at best. I hit one crazy hand 3 way where the pot got up to $50 and I hit the nut flush and the nut low. And then I started bullying the smaller stacks (which actually got me into a bit of trouble a couple of times). But seriously fun game. Makes LLHE look soooo boring. | ||

| Slick, I noticed that...I refused to give you any action on your raising hands :). In fact, there was one hand where I had something like 68suited in the SB and was going to call for half a bet until you raised. So I mucked my hand and the flop came down something like 66x (I think). But I figured if I called it and won, you would have pilloried me for making such a call in the forum. Actually I probably had the right odds to call that with all the limpers. Anyway, was glad to see you hit it. I kept saying "hi" but you were ignoring me. I guess you didn't realize I am "fulltiltboogy". Do you play there alot? | ||

| Hey mroban, I usually don't play with my chat on so if you were trying to say hello, that's why I didn't respond. I usually play at Party. I deposited $25 for the UPF tourney and managed to do well in a few tourneys. So now I have around $100 that I fool around with in the lower levels. | ||

| Got it Slick. You should get the Ultimate Buddy and add a few people from UPF. Thats what I did. So I say hello to everyone when they are online and we can play together sometimes. I like UB much better than Party Poker. I have been playing $2/$4 mostly, but I took a bad beat the night before and decided to hit some soft $1/$2 tables. They are pretty beatable. Party is a bit too insane for me. I have $100 in an account there and play strictly sitandgos. I have gotten very frustrated with the ring games at Party. Totally maniacal, I have found. Tables are like playing slot machines. Anyway, look for me next time. | ||

| Hey mroban, As long as you stick to strict guidelines with your starting hands and have a clear understanding as to knowing how strong or unfavorable the flop really is for your holding, Omaha can be a very profitable game. You were committed to playing really good starters,ie, three wheel cards containing an Ace...and when you play hands like that, (and there are some others as well), you can expect to have better results. PLO8 is a great game to trap your opponents on the flop and/or turn with. Even if you have a very strong hand pre-flop, *because* it's Omaha 8 and because there are so many combinations of hands that can be made........even with a premium hand pre-flop, it's not a huge favorite over the other hands that will be out there....but nonetheless.....it's still the "type" of hand that in the long run, will get you the chips because your hand will probably have better chances at making nut lows, nut highs by the simple reason of containing more outs (cards) that will help and improve your hand. I think your good results were a result of you playing favorable starting hands.......ones that truly work well with this game. If you stick to having alot of patience pre-flop, and after the flop, and can make some really good plays by reading your own oponents correctly, your results the next time or should I say, "In the long run", will also be good. Keep playing the game (and try limit Omaha as well).......they're great games and they really favor the better and more experinced player. Yes, the game will be frustrating at times, nut, nut draw and then NOTHING, but when you chose to play really strong starters it will work out for you anyway.($$) Good job mroban. 4 POKER | ||

| Thanks 4 POKER. Since I am a beginner at the game, your advice is invaluable. The good starting hands were easy - I read the book. The harder part for me is learning to read other players based on the betting patterns. I know this from experience in LHE, but I have no experience with this in PLO8 and PLO so I am operating a bit on instinct (just figuring a player is strong or weak and betting or folding accordingly). Is it normal for most players to limp pre-flop with strong hands in PLO8? For one, I felt if I raised with a hand like A23K, everyone would fold and I would win like .85. But if I limped in and the flop was good, I generally got paid off and could build a really good pot. That was my basic strategy - play good starting hands and if the flop was good, try to build a pot, while being aware of other players raising or re-raising. I also tried to only play hands beyond the flop when I had a shot at both high AND low. I learned the hard way that I could have a nut low (or high) and end up with a quarter of the pot as I split the nut low with another holding A2 and didn't have a high hand. Anyway, absolutely great game. I love it. | ||

| Hey mroban, Limping in with hands like A-K-3-2 in hoping to flop really strong is a good strategy for PLO8, especially when you're a good flop player and understand what's out there. One of the reasons why you may chose to play it passively pre-flop is, if all you flop is the nut low with a slim chace to improve to a high, if you allow players to see the flop (by not raising pre-flop), you'll have more volume on your low side of the pot and thats what you want in a PLO8 game if the betting now becomes a little heavy. But there's also some advantages of raising pre-flop as well, like taking the hand heads up and flopping nut low with maybe top pair or two pair. (something like that). But if you're just starting out with PLO8 than you may want to limp in more until you get a really good feel for the game and the plays/moves that are often made by more of the experienced players. But all in all, I like your strategy thus far. My suggestion would be to also play limit Omaha because if you make subtle mistakes in Omaha, it will cost you alot more if you make them in PL opposed to limit, plus it's a good way to learn the game even more and it's very safe on your bankroll when the game is played optimally. I played a full year of PLO8 and have played it in "live" games several times and although I did pretty good with it, for me, I prefer limit Omaha and would rather play the game at a higher limit as opposed to playing PLO8 with small antes. I just feel that in the long run, limit Omaha really favors the better player, where PL can sometimes be a little crapshooty with very big swings on your bankroll. But what you prefer is up to you. Good luck with all of it. 4P- | ||

| It really is a fun game to play with total idiots and the reason for that is that so many players will chase second that you can just slaughter them. When you play hold'em with retards you get sucked out on a lot, but since Omaha is a game of the nuts you don't have to worry about that. Pot limit Omaha: We put the laughter in slaughter. As for the ace and two wheel cards, hands like A459 are totally foldable in any position. Hands like A288 play better. Why A288? Well, I have fondness for this hand. The nice thing about it is that if you hit your set then you have a good chance at either a nut low or a tight. You're playing for the low, but a set of 8's plays a hell of a lot better for a backup high (especially on a board with a low) than a set of 6's. BTW, the real trick to PLO8 preflop selection is getting rid of middle straight cards. Basically a hand like JJKA is great, because if you hit it there isn't going to be a low and you're playing high only for that hand. When you have 789T though, any way of making a nut straight is also going to make a low and you have no chance of winning the low yourself...so with that hand you are always playing for half the pot and as a result it is total junk. Lastly, look for hands that play one way with a decent shot the other way. For instance A23T with a suited ace plays just great for a nut low, but where its true value shows through is when you can also snag a straight or flush with it and take the high. And yeah, that PLO8 game was nothing compared to the way they sometimes get. | ||

| thanks stdioh. I know you have a fondness for the Parker table. Wren told me. That table seemed pretty passive. I mean I probably was the least experienced Omaha player at that table and they all just kept chasing my nut hands. See you there soon. | ||

| I love playing on those tables - dundalk, warsaw, willeton, etc. Last night I was playing on a .50-1.00 blinds PLO8 game and when I sat down the average pot was over $100. How do you not make money with that action? | ||
