UB tournament disconnect cheating, tpir90036, 31. Jul 2003 08:40 | ||

| UB needs to institute some sort of limited all-in protection for tournaments like they do for the table games. last night in a tournament there was this one player at my table who kept stealing pots (which is fine). however, anytime someone popped him back, instead of folding, he would mysteriously disconnect and be considered all-in with his current bet. thus he gets a free chance at winning the pot if he magically draws out but doesn't have to fold or commit any more money to the pot. this happened *at least* 5 different times.....and he only disconnected on botched steal attempts. needless to say, the rest of the players (even the clueless ones) caught on to what this guy was doing and began to sling profanities around. there was no question about it. our table ended up getting broken up (thank god) so i don't know what happened to this clown and i don't even want to know in the off chance that he made the final table. anyone else ever see this? disconnects certainly happen but they should just limit people to 2 all-in protections per tournament or something similar. | ||

| I have seen this and i have reported it to support a couple of times on different sites,i urge everyone to do this when ever they think something is not right. Especially online it is in the interests of all players to pass on any info or wrong doing they may suspect. In answer to your specific problem when it happens you are meant to email support and they reset you all ins ( i think you start with one or two ) and they keep a track of them however i suspect unles you point it out to them then they will not chase up anyone who has ha too many all ins reset. Alternative is to play at Poker Stars where they dont have any all in protection. Chasepoker | ||

| I really like the time bank idea that PokerStars uses. Everyone gets their normal time to make a decision, and if they don't make it by then then they have extra protection with a 60 second time bank. I wish all the sites would use this. I hate having people use disconnects to avoid hard decisions. | ||

| i e-mailed UB and they were *very* quick to respond and definitely seemed very concerned. also, not sure if you misunderstood me but my big problem is with tournaments where there is *no* limit to the number of all-in protections you get , which can easily be abused. i did not (and would never) exploit this. one one hand i would say get rid of the protections entirely, or change it to check/fold after a certain number have been used....but at the same time it is probably annoying for dial-up people to get legitimately disconnected every so often. | ||

| Tpir, You should without a doubt e-mail UB support and complain about the player in question. I can't believe UB even offers players that many all-in protections, in this case five. It definitely sounds like cheating to me, and my guess is that the player simply pulled the cord out of the modem to make it look like a legit disconnect. Online poker sites have difficulty in proving whether a disconnection is valid or not, and I have seen my share of "mysterious" disconnections at crucial times in both cash games and tournaments. If you wouldn't mind, please inform us if and when you get a response from UB about how the matter was handled. Thanks. Giocatore | ||

| no problem, UB responded to all of my e-mails within minutes. not sure if what i received was a form letter, but it does say that the actions taken can't be discussed with me. i gave them the tournament number and user name of the player in question so maybe they actually found something in the hand history. either way i was *very* impressed with the speed and sincerity of their responses. let's just hope that topics like this are taken seriously since on-line poker losing it's integrity could hurt all of us severely.... here is the text from their latest response: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi there, A single incident of all in abuse is often difficult to prove conclusively, with the exception of the most obvious cases. At times we can prove conclusively that there was all in abuse. Many more times we can conclusively prove that the players were definitely not committing all in abuse; and what may have appeared as all in abuse to one in the game or observing the table, was merely a coincidence. If we notice a pattern of unusual activity then we will take actions. It is against our policy to reveal anything about another player, so the actions taken against the players you suspected of all in abuse can't be discussed with you. I am sorry for the troubles this situation has caused you. Sincerely, Charlie UB Member Serivces | ||

| Yeah...that sort of thing is really bad if it is done intentionally. I think that you should raise UB's attention about this one. There's really nothing they can do to stop it of course, if somebody is clever enough to just do it once when it matters. Still, I was under the impression that you only get an all-in protection twice in your UB career - have they made it unlimited now? And yeah, I don't think that the all-in protections should even apply to NL play, tournaments or otherwise, because it is just too profitable to disconnect at the right moment. The only problem is that there is no way to do things so that it is fair to accidental disconnects and so that it is not possible to abuse it. I think that UB would lose more customers to players who get folded out with the nuts in a big pot than they would lose to complaints of impropriety, so that is probably why it is the way that it is now. | ||

| I know that Planet doesn't offer All-in protection for their tournaments. If you get disconnected, they treat it like you went to the bathroom and just fold your hand and post your blinds. | ||
