RIVER SAILORS ARE KILLING ME, Cardmaster69, 31. Jul 2003 08:20 | ||

| I'm ready to quit playing cards. Can someone please help me find a solution to this? Every wednesday we play cards. Dealers choice of either texas, omaha or pineapple. SB of $2 and BB of $5. Then the flop is $5, turn $10 and river $10 with check/raises allowed and there's usually about 7-9 players . PROBLEM: I'm getting KILLED with the RIVER RIVER SAILORS. I play pretty much solid cards. I usually flop top pairs, trips and even straights on the flop. So I raise or reraise considering I have the lock on the flops and turns and there is always 2 or 3 hangers calling and calling hitting that river card. it's been going on for about 5 weeks now that I can't win with these yoyos. What should I do? Should I find another game ? Quit? or hope it's not always going to be like this? | ||

| Cardmaster: I am certainly not one of the experts here, so I am not going to go on and on about odds, long term results, etc. All I will say is that I have learned that table selection is very important in success at the game. I know I do well in certain kinds of games and generally don't in others. In games where eveyone takes a flop and sees the river, I generally get killed too and will not play. it seems like you are limiting yourself to this particular game with this particular group of guys. If you aren't liking that game, don't play in it! Or, introduce some new rules that minimize the ability to see the river (like pot limit games). I had a similar problem in my home game when we were playing $1 ante with $3 max raise. The odds are always correct to see the flop because everyone is already in the pot! One raise would almost certainly ensure most people would see the turn, and so on. I introduced pot limit and that changed everything. First of all, the guys in my game LOVE pot limit (because some are gamblers and the pots can get quite large) and we keep the buyins small and the blinds or ante relatively small (we have played .25 antes or .25/.50 blinds). This keeps it cheap but the pots still get large enough to have alot of fun. But if the cards aren't running you can fold alot, not get involved and not lose too much. It actually ends up costing you less on bad nights because the antes are lower. Anyway, give that a shot. Otherwise, start playing on line where you can move between games much easier and pick your tables to match the playing style you prefer. | ||

| I'll definitely take your advice. I guess the attitude I should take is . "I got it already, If they wanna go fishing it's going to cost them big". I'm ditching that game man because maybe it's not my type of game. Thanks. | ||

| We had the same problem in our friendly game so we raised it to no limit table stakes only (so it doesn't get too nasty). Strategy wise, why are you going to the river without a great hand? Sounds like you might need to fold more often if the flop doesn't help you. LL pots require big hands. NL pots can be bought with a good pair and kicker. | ||

| It is a good thing when players make bad calls up until the river. It just so happens that they are beating you now, but you'll be fine in the long run. Keep playing in the game, play well, and let me know where it is :) | ||
