Possible Collusion? What do you think?, mroban, 31. Jul 2003 07:39 | ||

| Last night I played in a really weird $2-4 holdem kill game at UB. I am not one for paranoia and usually dismiss weird goings on as just the random nature of poker at 100 hands an hour, but this one has me thinking. When I joined the table, it was the typical loose game, avg. $25 pots, lots of limping preflop, not too much raising preflop (and when there was, the raiser usually had a hand). Cards weren't running great, but I was playing a tight game and up $25 on a $200 buyin after an hour. All of a sudden, a player entered the game that I had played with before (in a big losing night). My notes on him were "loose player, plays strange hands, but not a maniac". In other words, he was not chasing a lot of bad pots and paying off, but was playing odd combinations. In any event, I was glad to see him in the game, thinking he was a real fish. I noticed 8-10 hands later that a pattern had developed where there was all of a sudden a lot of preflop raising going on. I wasn't thinking "collusion" just that the game was getting more aggressive and all of a sudden after another half hour to an hour, I was suddenly down about $30 on the night. 5 players would limp, I would call with a small pair, then the SB (player 2 to my left) would raise and new player would reraise and I would throw my hand away. This happened a few times. Then came the really weird hand. It was a kill game and a player to my right had the puck. One player called for $4, I folded with nothing, the player 2 to my left raised to $8, the blinds fold (I think) and the aforementioned new guy flat calls the $8 (essentially a 4 bet call). Two others call (including the guy with the kill puck). So four players are in the hand with a huge pot. The flop comes 336. There may have been one blind in, if so, he checked, new guy bets out, player with puck amazingly calls and the original preflop raiser now folds. Next card is an A, new guy checks and the player with the kill puck raises. New guy reraises, puck calls. River is a blank, new guy bets out, puck calls. New guy shows 3-9 offsuit, while the puck had an AQ. How does this guy essentially call 4 bets with a 3-9os preflop? How is that possible? This guy may have been loose, but definitely not a maniac (i don't think). I ordered the hand histories to see if the player 2 to my left was involved preflop with him in many hands. But the possibility here is that the player two to my left had a big pair, like QQ or KK and had his buddy raise to increase the pot. When the flop came down the way it did, they laughed and the other one took the lead, while the original raiser folded. I didn't lose any money on this hand, but it looked really suspicious. I actually (probably stupidly) wrote "did that seem weird to anyone"? I said to new guy "do you always call 4 bets preflop with garbage like that?" and some other things like "doesn't anyone think this game feels a little screwy?" I got no answers from anyone, not even the usual heckle like "go call Oliver Stone, jerk" or something like that. Nothing. So I wrote something stupid like "have fun colluding guys" and left the game. Then I proceeded to go to another game that was played with utmost honesty by all players and dropped another $40 (mostly on blinds, I only played 3 hands outside the blinds and didn't win any of them). Great night! Anyway, am I crazy here? | ||

| You're probably crazy, but it wouldn't hurt to drop an email to UB and let them know the hands played and that it looks suspicious. Hopefully they will look over the shoulders of these guys and see if anything dishonest is going on. | ||

| Thanks for the insanity vote! But seriously, that is a pretty strange hand. I am going to send it in, but will just chalk it up to a bad night of play. Of course, this guy is probably just your run of the mill maniac who wants to see a flop with a potentially huge pot. Sigh. | ||

| mroban- It may have been just a weird hand, and most likely was, but I will say this: I think "collusion" at the 2-4 tables on UB more often than any other limit. There are several names that I see at those tables any time I log in, they are always playing together, and they are always playing at least two tables together in the 2-4 limit. After playing with them, and watching them several times, I've concluded that they are probably not bright enough to steal anybody's money; but I still tend to think they are trying... -Moz "I smoke 'cause I'm hoping for an early death, and I need to cling to something." | ||

| Sorry, I play in California where everyone is a maniac. Especially the "blind" guys... If I see another blind bet, I am going to strangle someone. | ||
