| I am a bit new to tournament poker, and I was searching through old tournament results and I saw the phrase "Satellites" used, usually as something at the beggining of each tournament. I was wondering, what does this mean? Any help would be appreciated Thank You. | ||

| Hi Joe A satellite is a tournament that gets you into a tournament. In other words the prize you win is a tournament entry fee! Roy Cooke on 31. | Like Roy said, a satellite is a tournament to win entry into another tournament. The satellite is a fairly cheap tournament, say you pay $10 to get in. Then, if you win, you get to enter a bigger tournament, say one with $200 to $1000 entry fee, for free. The second tournament is going to have a much bigger prize pool, so you essentially get a shot at a big payday with a small investment. You will also see the phrase Super Satellite. This would be a mid level satellite. I'll give you an example from UltimateBet. UB has really cheap satellites every weekend. You pay $3.00 to enter the satellite and the top two players get free entry into the $200.00 Super Satellite. Once in the Super Satellite, the top 1 -3 places in the tournament win a free trip to Bermuda and the $4000.00 entry fee into UltimateBet's huge tournament with a guaranteed prize pool of $500,000.00, though the pool will easily top $1,000,000.00. The winner of this tourney will probably walk away with $200,000.00 to $400,000.00 with everyone at the final table doing pretty darn well for themselves, too. So for an initial investment of only $3.00, you have the chance of walking home with a huge amount of cash. The problem is that you have to beat a hell of a lot of people to get there. | ||

| Wow. I have to correct you a little. First, the supersatelites aren't $200. They are $100+9. Second, they pay one aruba trip per 60 entrants (or per 60 buy ins if it is a rebuy). Also, it isn't Bermuda - it is Aruba. | ||

| Ummmmm, yeah, you're right. So I didn't sleep so well last night. :- ) I did know the one Aruba trip per 60 entrants, that's why I said 1-3 trips. You usually don't see much more than 200 entrants into the Super. I really don't know why I started with the Bermuda bit and I do always want to say $200, even though I was in one and know it's a $100. Sorry about all that, but the example still shows my point as crazy as the specifics got. | ||
