I'm back in my native NJ for the week (currently live and work north of the border) and decided to take a trip to the local Border's to pick up a copy of Amarilo Slim's new book. What particularly struck me in the gaming section was the number of poker books available. I remember a couple years back I had to order Sklansky on Amazon because no local bookstore had any available copies. It's no secret what Moneymaker, the WPT and ESPN, among others, have done for poker these past few months, and apparently the demand is there to warrant bookstore chairs having a great selection of poker literature available. Needless to say I was quite surprised. I'm going to check out the new cardroom at the Borgata in AC tomorrow and very much looking forward to it. Also, for those interested, there's a good Brunson interview in the July edition of Casino Player magazine.

I totally agree. Poker is booming! And its just beginning. I was in Borders the other day and the normally abandoned poker section had two women standing there flipping through the selection. Of course I had to bump in and suggest Super System and Theory of Poker. I was suprised that these average people were so into watching the WPT and are now obsessed with the game. Working class middle aged women - people normally not into these type of things...

Its gonna get big - great for the day games!

Asher.

Hey stdioh . . . I've been living in Montreal for over two and a half years, ever since spending over a year in Europe I got used to the European way of life, and Montreal is about as close to Europe as you can get in North America, not to mention in the same time zone. There are many Montreal players who play on PokerStars and they've invited me to "underground games," but I haven't taken them up on their offer just yet. Of course we have the Casino de Montreal in town, but the closest they offer to "poker" are Caribbean Stud, "Poker Grand Prix" A.K.A. Let It Ride and Three Card Poker. I only go there maybe once every two months and when I go I only play blackjack, though it's sometimes annoying because anyone can come up behind you and wager on your hand, and you really can't do anything about it. What's worse, I never double down with 11 to a dealer's 10, but nearly everyone here does and if someone behind me has bet my hand he would get mad if I just hit, draw a 10 for 21 and then usually mumble something in French. However, the $50 tables don't have this second bet option, so if I've got the back-up I prefer to sit at those tables, not to mention the fact that most of them are "no mid-shoe entry," which I also prefer. I've also heard there's an Indian reservation about an hour away that supposedly has poker, but again I haven't really looked into it. So needless to say I play exlusively online, but I can't complain since I'm very satisfied with my results.

Ha! You're obviously not a card counter. The ideal situation in blackjack is one in which you are sitting there betting $10 at a table that ranges $10 to $500. Then when the deck gets hot your friend the 50 year old hapless looking Philipino woman wanders over and throws 4 black chips on top of your two red chips while you roll your eyes.

And as for doubling down on 11 against a dealer 10 this is a correct play for most counts and rule sets. There's almost never an excuse not to do it.

And yes, you should split 8's against a dealer's A.
