Checking the river courtesy, Stevolley, 30. Jul 2003 10:52

I play in an area where checkin the river heads-up is viewed often as a courtesy. I often do not play by these rules, nor does it bother me when someone else bets me on the river. I was wondering if this should change my strategy concerning calling turn-bets and also acting like I am extending the courtesy on the river. Thanks

My first thought is that they must have some really boring poker games. Why don't they just deal out two cards to everyone, put five on the board, and see who has the best hand?

I think you are right to ignore this "courtesy."

It may not be courtesy that is causing players to check the river. Sometimes, even if you think you probably have the best hand, you should not bet the river. The important thing is not whether you have the best hand, but rather if you will have the best hand when you are called. Sometimes depending on the texture of the board, only better hands will call you. For instance, if you were playing QJs and you made your flush on the turn, then another suited card comes on the river, you might want to just check if you have more than one opponent. If you bet and get called (or raised for that matter) it will only be by someone who has the A or K of that suit and has a higher flush.

Anyway, don't check the river out of courtesy, do it because you think a bet would have a negative expectation. As a corollary, don't bet just because you think you have the best hand, do it because you think a bet will have a long run positive expectation.

Hope this helps!

checking on the river as a courtesy? Are you playing poker or pokeno? when you play poker for money the goal of the game is to win all the money . If you want to check as a courtesy I am sure you can find an online free game at yahoo.com

Stevolley may be from Canada..in the Toronto area the 11 handed holdem games were so loose and multi-handed at one point that some peolpe almost chuckled and said...oh just the "2 of us"...and would check or say I don't bet heads up!!!...Can't really explain why this happened(happens)...when a guy would let someone off a big bet...but not lend you his cellphone for a local call....or buy you a coffee....it often centers out real players as some type of coldhearted sharks

No, I don't think it is any more courteous to check than to bet. Your opponent is not obligated to call the bet. If he has a problem with the bet, it's really ihs problem, not yours.

So you can bet when you think your hand is the better one, but avoid the payoff hands by checking it down? Sounds like a sweet set up to me. I wouldn't worry about the courtesy. Missing a bet even 3 or 4 times a session on the river will drastically lower your hourly rate! If you have the best hand, bet it!

I wouldn't check to my grandmother on the river if i knew i had her beat, even if she was playing with her soc. sec. money. So how do you think i would act with perfect strangers.

There should be no courtesy check on the river in poker. It's just silly.
The strategies that you use in a poker game should apply on *all* streets, not just on the turn to make up for the bet that you might lose on the river because you were put in the position to be a courteous player. That's bs. Noone plays the game like that except for people who are just there to have fun and nothing else. No....not even that....that is a dumb unwritten rule, I'm sorry! Find a new game or change the rule! Poker is WAR.....play it like such.

Screw that kind of courtesy. Never softplay anybody.

*BUT* oftentimes you should check the river with a hand that you suspect to be the best. Why? Because if your oponent is on a hand that he knows is worse he will fold it, but if he is on something that he knows is better, he will raise. Thus you have to weigh your chances of being called and being beaten, being raised and being beaten, and being folded to.

Generally something like top pair top kicker is not worth a river bet.

If you have position you can bet the river more often, but you need to know your opponent. Is he the type to checkraise?
