Right or wrong?, WilliamS, 30. Jul 2003 07:29

.50/1.00 blind no limit UB
I'm BB with 34 offsuit 5 limpers to me; I check
-Flop-
567 rainbow
I bet the pot (possibly a mistake, but I have the idiot side and want to find out if the other side is there. I also want to protect my hand from holding like A8 or A9.)
2 callers.
-Turn 10 giving a flush draw-
I over bet the pot substantially (which upon further analysis, I feel was a mistake) My thinking was ten could not have changed anything, but could have given one of the other players trips or a 4 to a flush. Either way the pot was large enough I wanted the hand to be over. Both players fold.
My questions are:
1) Did I give up too much potential profit by driving out the other players with too large a bet?
2) Did I make an error in making a turn bet that would only be called if I by the nuts?
Thanks, Will

Well, you have to ask yourself what the chances are that someone is holding 8-9. With 5 limpers in a low limit game game against mediocre players, it is highly possible. Moreover, one of the players could be holding 9-10.

I don't mind your play here. There is never anything wrong with protecting your hand. You can't always be greedy because it will inevitably bite you in the butt when your opponent catches his miracle card on the river. Also, you might get lucky and be up against 2 pair or trips. In that case, your aggressive play could be very rewarding financially.

It was aggressive but not dumb. On a big pot if you have the nut (so far) you have to go for it and scare off the limpers. The only time that is really risky is when you are going up against a big chip leader who can afford to pay for a draw.

You don't say what the other two player's stack sizes were, so I'm assuming they would be going all-in to your turn bet. I like your play. Your hand needs protection, and someone could take a shot here with a set. It's usually much better to make your opponents face a large bet than to try to size it down to where you might get played back when you have a made but vulnerable hand. You picked up a decent pot from the blind, nice hand.
