What are the reasons for the closing of the Mohegan Sun?

Granted, I have as little information on this as anyone but here's what I would guess. Foxwoods had a tournament on the WPT this past year and is having another one next year. They have more advertising (both from the tournament and just in general) and are probably drawing the majority of the new poker players in the area. That, in conjunction with the low profitability of a poker room compared to slots, I think may have led them to concede the poker crowd to Foxwoods in order to focus on another (and in their eyes more profitable) target audience.

My mother and sister play Bingo at Foxwoods every so often (ok, ok I go too sometimes. It's stupid and brainless but still a little fun every now and then) and the same thing happened with that a while back, Mohegan just wasn't able to compete with Foxwoods new Bingo hall and rather than put a bunch of money into trying to draw a crowd that was now settling down at Foxwoods (and again isn't that profitable) they changed their tactics to try and draw people for the food and entertainment.

The needed to expand and not close. I stopped going there because I always had to wait 1-2 hours for a table and then had to sit in one of the most crowded rooms I have played in. Foxwoods was always more enjoyable to me for playing poker, but if I want dinner and gambling (my girlfriend likes table games) I go to the Sun.

I don't know anything about the Sun, but I imagine it has to do with ROI. Any corporation in this country will do whatever is necessary to make the arrow on the profit chart go up.

I know that here is AZ, the casinos have a limit on how many slots they can operate, and how many BJ tables (now that it is legal) they can have, so they devote the remaining space to poker.

CAZ seems to be realizing that there's big money in tournament poker, and they are offereing more and more tourneys, and filling them all. They are closing the current card room, but only to move it to a different location. I'm hoping it means a bigger room, but I haven't gotten a straight answer on that. I know that they will add even more tourneys when they move...

Roy-

I know a couple of the dealers, this closing of the poker room has come as a surprise to them. I guess they are closing it on Sept 1, most likely to replaced by slot machines......

Because Peter Lau mismanaged that room. He would always refuse to spread games that players wanted. If there were ten players seated at an empty table with dealers available, he would make a list instead. He wouldn't put the games that would generally have a large quantity of chips in the middle near the windows. $1-$3 and $5-$10 stud should not be the games that people walking past the card room see first. He had no concept of what players would like for promotions. The room was very stingy about lounge passes, although certain select players were favored with unlimited access. He replaced and brought in a whole slew of Asian dealers that didn't have enough training in poker or English. He did nothing to earn his $100K per year, and had no imagination. That room could have been outstanding if it was professionally run. There were lots of players who would start games and play shorthanded, but they wouldn't open a table until they had 20 or more names on a list. Eventually the core players in the room got tired of all the bullshit there and voted by not patronizing the Sun. I and many other players saw this coming. It was not an insignificant part of my reason for moving away from New England to the midwest.
