First B&M Tourney Money Finish, MozMan, 29. Jul 2003 23:11 | ||

| Well, I finished in the money for the first time in a B&M tourney (did it once in an online tourney). It was a Limit HE tourney, $125 buy-in. Start with T2000, blinds/limits start at 25/50 & 50/100 and go up every 20 minutes for the first hour and 40 minutes, then go up every 30 minutes. Top 20 pay out. There were 120 buy-ins; 11-20 pay back the buy-in, 10 pays $299 and first pays $4900. I am very proud of the way I played overall, until I played one hand badly to cripple myself the hand before I busted out 15th. I was UTG with about T9000. Blinds are 500/1000; limits 1000/2000. Everyone is playing VERY tight, waiting for people to blind out. Almost every hand, a pre-flop raise is taking the blinds. I get Ac5c. I know I shouldn't even consider this hand, but think maybe I can fold everyone off with a raise, so I make it 2000 to go. I get one very hesitant caller, two seats to my left. Flop comes Q44, one club. I'm first to act, and think, if I bet out maybe he'll put me on a good pocket pair, or a set of Qs and fold off. Didn't work. He called. Turn comes 9c, now I have a 4-flush. Big mistake here, I check. He bets. Another mistake, I call. River comes a blank. I check, he bets, I fold with less than T1000 left and my BB on the next hand. He shows me Ad4d for the trips. I got blinded out on the next hand for my 15th place finish. Anyway, I really think if I don't take a chance on that hand and continue my tight/aggressive play, that I make the final table. The players were good, but I think I had a good chance to win without making a major, amateurish series of mistakes like that. I'll be back, tho! :) -Moz "I smoke 'cause I'm hoping for an early death, and I need to cling to something." | ||

| I think that your raise there was appropriate. You need to chip up and people are playing very tight and weak. This is a hand that is good to stealwith because there is a chance you make a big hand with it and win anyway if you get callers. Now when you get the caller and the flop misses you entirely, you can afford to get away from this hand, but as soon as you start betting with it you are going to get burried. Remember that your opponent is just as scared as you and you can check the flop and see if he'll check too. Really he isn't going to bet with anything worse than you have...not at this point. Now on the turn when you make your 4-flush, assuming that the flop was checked (which it wouldn't be obviously, but hear me out) you could try to steal with with a semibluf, since you now have flush outs and can guess that your A is probably good. Still, this is a bet that you don't want to have called because it marries you to the pot, so even here I think checking would be ok. Long story short, you planned this as a steal and when it didn't work you tried to roll over the guy. When the steal fails and you can afford to, back off and sit in the weeds for a better opportunity. | ||

| Thanx for the analysis. I feel better about the pre-flop raise now... I guess my real undoing was trying to roll over the guy, I really should have check-folded on the flop. I'm really starting to feel like I'm becoming a solid player now, and can't wait or the next tourney. :) -Moz "I smoke 'cause I'm hoping for an early death, and I need to cling to something." | ||
