Hi, my name is Banning Symington, I've been posting here for awhile. I figured I should introduce myself formally. I just recently got a compliment from Roy Cooke on a couple of my postes so I decided to come clean. It is pretty funny really. You guys are all hanging out talking about how you play for a living or to supplement your incomes. I am a university student who still has 2 more years to go. I am inundated with debt from student loans. I decided that poker was cool so I organized my buddies together and we play every now and again for a buy in of 5 bucks. I had never played in my entire life, not even once until half a year ago. We play 5/10 cent blinds with the betting being 10/20 cents. We've been doing that for about half a year now. I have no B&M casino experience and have only a very small amount of internet experience playing for pretend money. My only experience in a casino was when my buddy and I decided to go play a 25 dollar buy in tournament. I will tell you the story of how I was taken out with pocket aces in just a bit. I initially learned everything that I knew from MCU as well as a few other sites on the net. I am still too poor to buy any poker books but hey, Nick the Dentist who plays poker is lending me his because he plays alot of poker. Anyhow, I just thought I should make sure everybody knows that I ain't no poker player, and that whenver I say stuff you should be aware of where it is coming from. I try to contribute because I feel that I have a pretty good theoretical knowledge of poker as well as a good brain for game theory. When I analyze a hand with you guys and say, "I don't know if the raise on the turn was a +Ev play" that is only what I say when I have time to think about it. When I'm actually playing it is more like, "WOW, I just got a pair of aces on the flop, I better bet, hey, he just raised me, what is my kicker? wow it is a 9, I bet that is decent, hey I wonder what he has? ah well it doesn't matter I have the top pair, I'm indestructible" Anyhow, now you guys know my deep dark secret that I'm not a prostar. Anyhow, I really enjoy this forum and you guys are humorous and insightful, now here is my one and only poker tourny story.
There were rebuys and everybody and their dog was rebuying like crazy, I didn't have the cash nor the will to spend that much cash on a tourny so I ended up being the second one out (after my buddy Tom) when I had my aces cracked. It is actually a pretty funny story. I had been playing tight all along because everybody else was a bunch of maniacs because they were rebuying all along, the dealer knew I was tight and also knew that I was a newbie because I had told him so, because you guys at this forum said to do so so as. So he actually had me pegged as a tight passive. I was directly to his left and thus couldn't see the player to his right because the dealer was a big guy. I had pocket aces, he turned to me showing me it was my action, I picked up my chips because I knew that I shouldn't touch my chips beforehand because that would be a tell. So, he looked at me I pick up my chips and begin counting them out for a raise. He assumes I am calling, and indicates that the next players action, he throws in his chips, at which point I feel irritated, and say loudly and with authority (because Mike Caro says to bet aggresively and loudly to make your presence known at the table) "raise" and then the dealer says to me, "you can't raise because a player after you put in chips" I'm pretty sure he is wrong because I read alot of general rules about poker at Planet Poker and feel that the bettor who is out of turn should be punished and not me, but am still nervous about it. I should have called over a floorperson but jeepers I was a newbie. The dealer even knew he was a moron because he was looking at me with I'm sorry eyes. Long and skinny of it was that a ton of people got to limp in. Flop was perfect for me. Jxx I bet out and get raised, raise back. Turn was another jack, I think to myself, wow I'm totally toast, but I'm pretty close to chipping out, and besides I'm totally on tilt now. I go all in on the turn, and lose to a freaking J7 off suit. I figured it was a pretty good story because it shows how a person can go to a casino and never want to go back again. My raise preflop could have easily folded that J7 but I'll never know.

Don't take this as an insult, but your post almost sounds as though it is coming from under the influence!

In any case, I think everyone can contribute in some way. Thanks for your contributions so far Banning. And don't be intimidated by a little bad luck in your first run, keep at it and you'll do well in the long run!

I'm from good 'ol Alberta, I'm in Edmonton, originally from Medicine Hat. Feel free to make fun of the name Medicine Hat you guys everybody else does. It was named after an Indian medicine man who lost his hat while doing some ceremony, because the place that I was born was where indian tribes lived at during winter because of the frequent chinooks and because it is hilly considering it is in the plains so it hides from the weather well. Where is Kitchener? Is that in Ontario somewhere? I probably should know but I'm not too keen on geography.

About one hour's drive West of Toronto.

And I hear that both the Yellohead in Edmonton and the Elbow River in Calgrary have great card rooms. Actually I grew up in BC and Albertans are A-O-K in my book.

wow what a post.

But hey, realize this Banning, you are not the only amateur here. Read my bio; I only played my first real poker game 6 months ago.

You have some good insight, so hearing from you is never a waste.

And I haven't even really started playing real poker, considering the home games I play in don't even have real rules... they won't even let me raise pre-flop!
