How to never look like a rookie in a poker room?, Robbins, 29. Jul 2003 11:30 | ||

| I'm going to a Casino Poker Room for the 1st time and I'm sure I will look like a total rookie but what are some things I should do (or not do) to avoid looking like a total rookie? I've been told to take my chips out of the rack, never play out of turn, and tip the dealer when I win a pot. What other great advice is there? Thanks in advance! | ||

| just know how the betting works like blinds and kill pots... if you don't know then ask, its better than making a mistake... but my first time i messed up at the 3/6 table and tried to bet 3 on the turn when 6 was the new minimum bet. | ||

| > What is a kill pot? Hey Robbins, I remember you posting earlier. Good luck. It isn't as hard as it seems. A kill pot occurs when one person wins two consecutive hands. For example, let's say you win a hand. The dealer will pass you the pot and a disc. The disc simply respresents that you won the last hand. If, at any point during the next hand you fold, the disc is taken from you and subsequently sent to whomever wins that hand. If you win a 2nd consecutive hand, the disc will be turned over with the word Kill exposed. If you are playing a 3-6 game, then you will be required to place $6 in the pot (2-4 game would be $4). The betting is then doubled for that hand. In other words, it is $6 to call to see the flop instead of $3. The betting on the turn and river becomes $12. As the hand starts, you are treated as though you are posting a big blind. In other words, you can simply check when the betting comes to you or you have the option of raising it to $12. Of course if it has already been raised to $12, then you must call the raise, fold or reraise. It will remain a kill pot until someone other than you wins the pot. There is a ton of strategy that has been discussed on earlier posts. You can search for kill pots and I'm sure you will find even more info than I am giving you. Unless you have a great starting hand (AA, KK, AK) I would suggest folding the first couple kill pots you come across and just observe the proceedings. Good luck and hope this helps. DJpoker | ||

| I don't recommend someone playing a "kill" game their first time out. Scrubbie I was watching TV the other day, and I heard them say your dream job is only a call away. So I called and was like, "Is this the chocolate factory ran by big titted hookers???" | ||

| Some places you have no choice. My B&M runs 50 tables, and the only HE/Omaha games that are not regularly kill are 20/40 and higher. Even some of those are kill or half-kill. -Moz "I smoke 'cause I'm hoping for an early death, and I need to cling to something." | ||

| Yeah, the spread HE, Omaha and Stud... everything from 3-6 to 75-150. Some mixed games at higher limits, and an occasional razz or crazy pineapple. They will be closing the poker room next month, tho, and moving it to their other location, about five miles further away for me :( I don't know if the new joint will be smaller or bigger. I hope bigger, because there is always a wait. -Moz "I smoke 'cause I'm hoping for an early death, and I need to cling to something." | ||

| I know how you feel. I recently went to a live room and I was so nervous that I played awful! I did things I never, ever do in home games (folded out of turn, misread my hand, etc.). But, once I relaxed (and slowed down a bit) it was much better. I recommend easing into it, try to relax, and pay attention to the dealer. And, if you are unsure about ANYTHING - ask the dealer. Remember everyone's new at some time. | ||

| Understand the rules of your particular cardroom before sitting down. There should be a sign with these rules up somewhere in or by the room. Or, if you feel conspicuous doing this, or have any particular questions, ask a floor manager. | ||

| All very good advice, and nobody wants to look foolish (I folded my BB when I could have checked)---but don't forget that looking like a rookie can have it's advantages---other players may not take you seriously enough even though you are well prepared to take their money. | ||

| It might sound really stupid but tell everyone at the table that you have never played in a Casino before but make it clear that you know the rules ! After they have finished salivating they will be more than happy to take your money, er, i mean help you out. I did this the first time i ever went to a Casino, entered a NL tourny with 150 people and ended up coming 8th ! People will be more than happy to show you the ropes and will happily answer any questions you have ( at least in England they will ! ) as long as you dont act a jerk are both respectful and courtious most people will be fine and wont care if you make any mistakes. Go in have fun and soak up the atmosphere of your first visit, play for a bit, take a break ( ask what happens to your seat when you take a break ) walk around watch other games, ask questions to the right people and you will have a great time and will wonder what you were ever worried about. Have fun play tight and do UPF proud !!!!!! Chasepoker | ||

| Know when the action is to you and KNOW the betting structure...otherwise just have a good time....remember...folding is your most profitable weapon....unfortunately....we all had to do this for the first time...there is no avoiding looking like a rook in most cases...you need experience. | ||

| Common rookie mistakes: Splashing the pot- Throwing your bet into the pot instead of out in front of you so the dealer can count it. Not pushing your bet out far enough. Some dealers are really picky about that and will sit and wait for you to push your chips out another 6 inches before they consider it valid. Stinging a bet- Make sure you have enough chips in your hand to make the entire bet. Dont put out a stack then go back to grab more chips. That is a dealer call but sometimes a player can call 'stringing' and you will be forced to use the first stack as your bet. When your movement stops for a second the next player will often make his move. To be safe always verbalize your decision. "call and raise". Dont ever try to take the cards past the edge of the table. Be aware of when it is your turn to post blinds or bet and don't make them remind you every time. Don't take too long to make your decisions on every hand. You can think about a big hand but don't sit and think about every freakin fold or call. Be careful of hand gestures that could be interpreted as a Check when you are thinking about betting. If you are really new and nervous don't be afraid to show your cards on every showdown. You might actually have a winning hand and unkowningly muck it. As long as you show your cards your hand is valid even if you didn't notice the straight or flush. The best newbie bluff is to say "What's the most I can bet?" | ||

| Know if your card room has a jackpot and know what hands you need to qualify. protect your cards by putting a chip on top. Sometimes if you are sitting close to the dealer they will accidentally take your cards or they may think that you have mucked. If somebody sais "I have a straight" or whatever, make sure you see it first before you throw your hand away and as mentioned before always turn your cards face up. If you are running low on chips and give your money to a chip runner make sure you tell the dealer how much you are playing behind. If you don't mention this and you get a monster hand you will have to go all-in and not win as much. So tell them how much you are rebuying in chips. If someone says "raise" make sure you know how much they are raising. I have had situations were someone was going all in and only raised one dollar more, I mucked my hand because I thought I would be paying a full raise and of course I would have won had I called that extra dollar. | ||
