Folding when you can Check, Eaglesfan1, 29. Jul 2003 10:58

While playing for play money on the internet, I've noticed some people fold when they could easily check. I don't understand this, Is it because there hand is just so bad that they don't want to get "Sucked in" to calling a small bet, or are they just stupid... When I see someone doing this do I think, This guy isn't a very experienced player? And use that my advantage... ? Its also just play money there are a lot of clueless players out there. (I haven't stepped up to playing real money yet)

Sometimes I do it when I don't want anyone to see what I have been playing and I obviously don't think i can win. Keeping deceptive about the hands you play from time to time can over time add to your bankroll.

People do this all the time at my B&M's, even experienced players and even in tournaments. I believe it's something of a frustration/tilt move. Any way about it, it's a dumb thing to do.

I've accidentally tried this and the website warns me "It's free to check. Are you sure you want to fold?" I didn't realize that there might be a strategy involved at the showdown.

The only time I will check out is when I am absolutely sure that I will lose the hand no matter what and when I really don't want to show my cards. The thing is that if you do check out people will know that you are "embarrased" by your cards and will assume that they are as bad as they could possibly be.

Play cards you aren't embarrased to play and show them down when it is time. I've seen a player check out on the flop only to have all the remaining players make no bets and chop when they all play the board.

No, there's never a good reason.

Never ever ever if there are more cards to come and only if i have the absolute non nuts (if that is a word )say i have 23 and the board is 4 7 8 T K i might do it but i dont really see much point.

I know Mike Caro ( rhymes with Arrow ) wrote something about not doing it somewhere in the MCU which you can find here:

Actually i havent read the MCU for a bit might have to re-read it helped me a lot when i first started reading up on the game..

The title "folding when you can check made my brain start to work. It is common knowledge that you shouldn't fold, you should check. The player that folds reveals his hand and not only that but reveals his future hands as well. My buddy plays poker with a guy who folds when he should check EXCEPT when he is going to check raise. It is totally predictable. He only does it when he has a really good hand and my buddy just folds. So, here is the kicker. What if I started folding when I should check and then one time didn't and did the checkraise thing. Later on I could use it as a tool to bluff. Using your own folding handicap against your opponents. Does that sound too contrived? Do you think it would work? Or is it not worth it because of the free card you could win when you don't fold to a check.

As I stated above, I will only do it if I don't want the others to know what I was playing, and only on the river. Since it is a non-standard move, it throws other players off by getting them asking "What did he do that for?" Once in a while, this is a good thing.

And one other thing...there is ALWAYS a time in some game where EVERY strategy is optimal. Players who say "it is never right to do this" need to expand their tunnel visions of how to play.
