Hit the wall playing $3/$6 online, spartan51, 29. Jul 2003 07:22 | ||

| Hi all. I have been steadily climbing up in limits playing online over the past few months and for the past 10 days or so I have seem to have hit a wall once I decided to play exclusively at $3/$6. I have had some real good sessions (40+ big bets) but then I have had sessions that were just as bad. Two areas that seem to give me trouble: Pre-flop raising: This seems to happen much more frequently at these limits. I seem to struggle with which hands to defend my blinds with. ( I think I might be folding too much here) For example, say I have KJ or QT offsuit in the big blind, there has been a raise and 5 callers. Easy fold? Check & Raise: This play seems to happen way too often post-flop. For example, I limp in with QJ offsuit in late position, flop comes Jxx, checked to me, I bet, get raised, 2 or 3 callers. Fold, call or re-raise? Of course, the raisier almost always will cap it and then lead out betting on the turn if reraised. I see people making this play over and over with middle pair or a lower pocket pair. Thanks to all who respond! | ||

| Well, there are alot of issues that factor into answering some of the questions you're asking. as far as a preflop raise with 5 callers, seems like hands such as QTo or KJo are probably giving you good enough odds, but you have to keep in mind that if you don't hit top two pair or an open-ended straight draw, you probably need to release on the flop. This seems pretty loose even for a 3-6 game, but with a pre-flop raiser and 5 callers, top pair, mediocre kicker isn't likely to win the pot. In the same situation with only 2 or 3 callers, I routinely throw hands such as these away in the BB. They are easy trap hands, and I find that if I don't have the proper odds to go for hitting at least two pair or a straight draw on the flop, it's just too easy to lose money on these kinds of hands to justify. As far as the post-flop checkraising, it's trickier. you say you are routinely seeing check-raises into multiple players with only medium pair or a pocket pair with at least one overcard? If the game seems as loose as you say, these types of plays are going to be big losers in the long run. In this situation, you should simply tighten up, and throw away hands such as top pair, 3rd best kicker (especially against a coordinated board) because there are just too many ways you can already be beat or someone can draw out on you, especially if there are 3-4 ppl contesting the pot with you. It will be frustrating to see people making a play at you with a worse hand come showdown time, but in the long run, making plays like this into mutliple players is going to bust those people. Save your money for the times when you feel like a clear favorite. Playing hands like QJo even on the button is not a good strategy even at this low a limit unless you have many limpers, and even then you are once again hoping for two pair or a straight draw. You cannot possibly stand a raise with a hand like this even if you are sure the 4 limpers in front of the raiser are coming in as well. My advice would be to tighten up considerably until you get a better feel for the players at this limit. You might be giving up a little bit of expectation on some of the marginal hands because the game seems so loose, but until you are more confident at what is happening at the table, it is much more likely for you to get in trouble with them. If you've been moving up in limits, it's been my experience that there is a significant jump in playstyle from the 1/2 and 2/4 limits to the 3/6 and 5/10. You must raise your starting hand requirements when you make this jump, because there are knowledgable players who will punish you for marginal holdings, and are much more aggressive than most 1/2 and 2/4 players. | ||

| Thanks for the solid advice. I have definitely tightened up my game since moving up to $3/$6. I generally see between 21% to 25% of the flops. I was concerned that I had perhaps tightened up too much, giving the average $3/$6 player much more credit than due. I know another leak in my game is paying people off too much at this level. I have trouble letting go of the top pair top kicker, top two pair, etc. when someone bets into me on the turn or river or raises me. I continue to call in these situations even though I feel (probably know I am beat.) Thanks again. | ||
