Troublesome Trips in LLNLHE, Jeffrey Biship, 28. Jul 2003 23:31

Playing NLHE on UB; .01/.02 blinds, $2 max buy-in(i).

In the cutoff with JdTs and three limpers to me. I call as do the blinds. Six to the flop for .24.

Flop: Js Jc 6s

It goes check times four to the big stack ($9.73) on my right who bets .02: a popular bet at this table. It's often an opponent's idea of a semi-bluff, though it can also be raise bait. I take the bait and pot it, due mainly to the flush draw. I expect to either lose a big pot or win a small one. I am chagrined to see three callers behind me with the bettor folding. VE-dy INte-desting.

Turn: (Js Jc 6s) 4d

Check-check-check. I bet $2, enough to put anyone who calls me all-in. No one does. I can't decide if I'm happy or sad.

Did I play this too hard, or did I do the right thing?

Thanks,

Jeff

(i)I'm playing this game because I'm broke, and because one Saturday afternoon, I was redownloading all the poker clients after having deleted them the previous month, and noticed I had $20 in my UB account. What the hell. Guess I'm rounding again.

With a flush draw on the board, you absolutely have to bet enough (generally pot) to make people playing for their flush draw to be making a bad mathematical decision.

So I don't think you played it too hard. Especially at those limits, it might take quite a bit to push someone off their draw..

I think your reasoning has some flaws.

First of all, let me address "mainly for the flush" ... you do not want to hit a backdoor flush - it is death on a stick. You have 2 outs to a backdoor flush, but your chance of winning with a T high flush is very slim. If it is good, you won't get any callers and you can't afford to bet it. You also can't call a well made bluff with this card.

Now, as for the jacks, you flopped top trips with a good kicker and there are a lot of outs against you there, so I think the pot raise was a good one. The fact that you got three callers means that somebody is slowplaying or all are drawing against odds. Good - punish them for their silly draws by pushing in on the turn when a brick falls. Your hand is vulnerable and you would rather take the money now than risk losing it to a dip picking up a hand on the river. If they want the money, make them pay for it. Be happy that they folded and you took down a nice pot. It isn't like you were holding the immortal nuts, so you shouldn't want them to come along.
