Best Money- Tourney or Regular?, TexRoadkill, 28. Jul 2003 16:46

I dabbled in regular low limit hold em games for awhile at a local casino and I never really saw anyone making much money. The tables were always tight and it seemed like everyone just got raked.

I started playing NL online tourneys at PartyPoker and have been making a few bucks and will probably start trying the higher buy ins if my success holds up. I like tourney play because your losses are fixed and winnings are guaranteed. Even if players collude against you they can't take you for more than the buy in.

Tourneys seem to make more sense for dollar/hour entertainment value but what about profits? What do you serious money players prefer?

I play the 30 dollar sit n go's, and a rough estimate for me is about 10 dollars a tournament (about an hour) is what I expect.

I'd assume in a 10 dollar sit n go I'd expect more like 4 dollars a tournament to be my profit.

And anything higher I'd actually expect to make less, due to the higher competiton, although I'm confident I could beat it.

Busting out early in a sit n go makes them go faster, and lately my sit n go's have been running 45-50 minutes.

That's a good question. I make a nice profit just playing the SitNGo's, but that' doesn't mean I might not do better playing ring games.

What I like about the SitNGo's is that they are a fixed game with a beginning and an end. They generally take about an hour (maybe an hour and a half for the 18 player two table ones at PartyPoker), and you get a lot of play for your money.

The other nice thing about SitNGo's is that you get to play a ten handed game for a bit, and then you get to play shorthanded and finally heads up play (poker gods willing). I like the different varieties of play all in a short period of time.

I definately like the gameplay in SitNGos better for the same reason. It feels like more of a competetion than a grind. It seems like you need to play the $30 games to really start making any money. I was making a few bucks in the $5 and have been holding my own in the $10. Once I get a little more consistent I'll probably move up to the $30.
