Beginner's luck?, MozMan, 28. Jul 2003 12:24

I stopped by my B&M last night for a little 3-6 HE on my way home. We get a new player at the table, on my immediate left. He's a younger guy, and it's pretty obvious he really doesn't know anything about the game yet. He didn't understand the betting structure, didn't know what a kill was, etc...

Anyway, I played four hands with him. First three, he had good starting cards, and flopped a full house on each one... three in a row! Then, the last hand, he's in the SB, but posting a $6 kill (again), and I'm on the button. I get AsTs. There is only one limper before me, and I decide I will limp too. In retrospect, I should have raised, but was getting low on chips, and was a little gun-shy at this point. The new guys checks, and we are 3-way at the flop.

Flop comes A44 (one spade), and the SB/killer bets out. MP limper folds, and I call, making him for an Ace, and hoping my T is a good enough kicker. Turn comes a red 9, he bets I call. River comes a Jc, he bets I call. He turns over 94o for another boat. I decide it's time to go home.

Really funny part about this whole thing: I left because I knew I was headed for tilt in a bad way. But by the time I got half-way home, I felt a lot better. You just don't get to see that kind of run too often, and I thought, "ya know, that's really why I love to play. It's just a great game when it can still take you by surprise no matter how many hands you play."

I would have wanted to stay so I could see that new guy lose all his money, he must have thought he was the King of Poker after all those hands...
