Here's my situation. I started keeping records of my play about six months ago. I keep track of time played, how I did for the session and overall, and my hourly rate as it progresses. I started off playing online limit hold'em, but in the last few months have been playing no limit sit and go tournys almost exclusively. I have had pretty good results with both types of games, but the tournys seem to fit my schedule a little better, as I often can steal away an hour to play a tourney. I keep overall records, and for each type of game played. I do all of my record keeping in excel. I know the math of the game (hold'em) fairly well, but do not have good foundation in statistics generally (went to school for polysci/history, not math). My questions are these:
1. How can I compute standard deviation (in English, please, not mathematicianese) and what does the result signify? (I know this is an indication of the fluctuations that are expected in a game if the sample is sufficiently large, but what I'm looking for is an explanation of what the resulting number would mean. For example, if I get a stddev of X, what does X tell me about my fluctuations and bankroll requirements? Would this be different for ring games and tourny?
2. How much (in hourly rate or expectation) can a good player figure to make playing online sit and go tournys? How about low and middle limit online games? At the lower buyin tournys I'm comfortable with I seem to make about 10% less than the buyin per hour. At the higher limit I'm comfortable with, I have made about 15% more than the buyin per hour. Are these numbers reasonable?
Sorry about the long post.
Any feedback will be appreciated.
