What am I doing wrong?, asnyder, 26. Jul 2003 22:43

Blinds at 2000/4000 I'm sitting with ~$22K in chips(2 tbls remain out of 46, CL around $50-60K), and I find myself folding against someone else' raise when I'm holding Ax suited (7 thru jack), KQ suited, etc. The only thing I'm thinking is "well if I call, and get out drawn, then I'm done". My stack, basically, got blinded away and with ~$9500 in BB I get AJ and go all in with 2 callers in front. SB folds, CL (now around $70K) calls with 33 - needless to say, the board is all over the place and his 3's hold up.

Now, I know that late in the game I can't continue to wait for AA, AK, or KK - but what can I do different this late in the game? If I fold strong hands (against a decent raise), I assure myself living to see another hand in hopes of seeing a top 3-4 hand; but I feel that if I call/raise with those strong hands I'm taking a crap shoot of getting out drawn - like I did.

Thanks. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this was in reference to all-in raises or just raises in general. I'm addressing my answer based on raising in general.

Players are going to raise and try to push other players around. This is especially true in the later stages of a tourney. You need to pick your spots and see some flops... even if it's expensive and with less than excellent cards. You can always fold if you miss. If you hit however, this is where you can mop up against overly aggressive players.

You can usually tell who the bully of the table is. Just realize that this player can't always have the goods. You can not play this game with fear. You can not be afraid of losing all your chips.

Just play your best and make smart decisions. That way, at the end of the night, you can feel good about the way you played regardless of the outcome.

Good luck!

Sometimes you just don't get anything you feel is worth making a stand with, or even a situation where you might raise just the blinds from late position. You play good poker to get within sight of the final table, and everything just seems to dry up. It is possible you aren't doing anything wrong. That KQs you had may have been your only opportunity to flop something, but you didn't say where the raise came from or what your position was. It isn't a great hand, but maybe you could have called a raise cold for about 1/3rd. of your stack if you had the aggressor covered. It's debatable whether you should have moved all-in from the big blind with AJ against more than one opponent, particularly when one of them is the chip leader. I probably would have checked and taken the free flop.
